Pay It Forward - Referral Fee with a Twist

Earlier this week a very dear old friend whose husband had recently passed away called and asked me for a favor.  I was happy to help her in anyway I could since she and her husband had always been very generous with their kindness to me and my former partner.

My friend inquired if I knew of a good agent in the southern part of our state because her grandson and his wife just had their first baby and they want to buy a home there but they didn't know who to turn to.  She said she knows lots of agents but there is only one who she would trust to give advise to her grandson and that was me.  I was very flattered but this also put quite a responsibility on my shoulders because although I was originally from the area her grandson wants to move I haven't kept up with the market and the agents in that area.  I told her I would look into it and call her back and her grandson as soon as I find the right agent for them.

I checked on MLS and discovered that an old professional acquaintance had recently opened an office in the town my friend's grandson wanted to move to and there was an agent in this office who looked familiar.  I called my old professional acquaintance who is the broker and asked him who would be perfect to help my first time home buyers and he suggested the agent who looked vaguely familiar to me. This agent was very well trained and well versed in first time home buyers needs.  In a way I felt like fate was steering me in the right direction.  We left it that the agent would call me to get the details and work out the referral details.

I called my friend's grandson and told him of the good news that I had found the perfect agent for him, gave him her name and contact info.  We chatted about his grandparents who he adored and how he missed his granddad. I told him that the last time I saw him I was visiting his grandparents and he was crawling around on their floor in diapers and how amazing it is that now I'm talking to him and he's grown up and now has a baby in diapers.  We ended our conversation with him assuring me that I'll be invited to their new home warming party and he thanked me for my help.

A little later the agent who I had refered him to called me and we discussed all of the details.  It became obvious in speaking to her that she was the perfect agent for my friend's grandson.  When it came time to discuss the referral fee I told her that I wanted part of the referral to be a gift back to my friend's grandson at closing from me in memory of his granddad.  Some how I think his granddad's spirit has had a hand in all of this.

This was one of the most thoughtful deeds I have heard of yet.  When we loose someone close to us you just can't help notice that the whole world continues on with their day to day lives like nothing has happened.  It is as if the rest of the world doesn't care that an important life has been lost.  Your kind gesture will let that young man know that his Grandfathers life did matter and someone else did take time to respect his memory.  You have been a good friend.
