Paying It Forward . . Nothing Stops the Mail From Being Delivered
Last week, coming home for a break, I started to stop in front of the house like I usually do to collect the mail. The box was empty, which is a bit unusual at this time of month because it's typically bill delivery time. As I turned back to my car, I saw my mail person, Gina, walking towards me, which is unusual as we are on a motor route, waving at me with mail in her hand.
As she got closer, she started to explain that the truck's transmission had stopped and she was just delivering our street, which is a cul-de-sac, and then she would have to wait for someone to come out to get her. She was very frustrated as she had already called twice that day for help, explaining to the office that the truck was acting up and the transmission was not engaging properly.
As I know she was at the end of the route, I suggested that she wait for me, as I would empty out my trunk and back seat and we could finish the route and I would take her back to the office.
Her smile was priceless.
We loaded up the trunk. Do you know that the post office also picks up packages as well?
We delivered the last 3 streets of mail, while she explained that it had been a very frustrating day, made worse because it was also her birthday.
I got her back to the office, probably an hour out of my day. I insisted on a hug for payment, the kiss was her bonus to me, I sang her a Happy Birthday tune, she didn't scream, and away I went.
I hadn't been close to a mail delivery truck like this since the summers I worked in the post office delivering mail while I was going to college. Didn't come any where close to a hug or a kiss in those days, but did manage to swat away a few angry dogs.
An hour of my time to make someone else's day a touch better, and maybe give her a better start to her evening and birthday celebrations with her family.
