A Long, Long Time Ago, Back in the Days of the Dinosaurs---------

Real Estate Agent with Hogue and Belong Bankers Hill- San Diego, CA

.....people used to meet face to face. They would go to the local Stone-Age Coffee House, have a cup of Brontosaurus brew or Pterodactyl tea, look each other in the eye and have a conversation! Imagine that! The only communication they had back then was face-to-face. There was no internet, no telephone, no texting.Fast forward to the latter part of the 20th century. Blogs, e-mail, texting, cell phones, Skype----a jazillion ways to "talk" to someone without even having to look them in the eye! Cool!!

I love online marketing BUT there is nothing like a handshake, a small, shared personal tidbit about your families, a one-on-one conversation.

A nod, a smile, a recognition that we are both aware of the fact that we are in a people business---good people skills need to be "honed".

Today, I had the pleasure of having coffee with a new Active Rainer, Carl Kahn. I contacted him to meet, and  to see how we could help each other out. Carl is a truly vibrant guy---he knows his stuff and has a wonderful ability to listen intently to what you are saying. We each spent 15-20 minutes telling each other about our companies and our specific niches. I really think Carl and I will be referring business to each other at some point this year.

Oh, so you may be thinking I could have just e-mailed Carl and told him about my "niche" and to just refer me business.  I disagree and here's why. The art of human connection has gotten put on the back burner for many in this industry. I think Blogging is a great way to communicate, but nothing will ever take the place of face to face meeting. I say your business is going to suffer if you don't make an effort to get off your duff, and meet with your fellow industry colleagues.

So the next time an industry professional calls you---mortgage officer, Realtor, Inspection Services, Stager etc. and asks to meet for coffee, take them up on the offer, and don't be thinking "Why would I want to meet, there's nothing in it for me".  Think again and think outside the box.

Your biggest and best client could come in the most unexpected way!

This is a very clever post....and you are so right. I love to work at my local Starbucks because I often get leads that way....and it makes me shower LOL. Had to hit the "suggest" on this one.

it's so nice to get your comment on my Blog post----I like your comment of having to get up and shower-----put the old baseball cap and sweats in the closet. So true---we all need to get out there!

Deborah,  I couldn't agree with you more!  I set up appts all week to have coffee and meet people.  There is a hidden agenda to find some way of helping each other but it is never in your face nor offensve.  If it happens ,  it happens,  if not,   I just had a great conversation with someone and learned a little more about them.  I do everything I can to remember the folks I visit with and often write personal notes to them when I have the opportunuity.

Thank you for bringing this up! Joe

Thanks for your comment. It really is alot of fun meeting new people.

Good for you---you know I have asked and asked --10-20 folks to meet for coffee a few months ago--- and most have not even responded by e-mail! I was very surprised....so I am going to persist.

Good reminder for us all Deborah.  I can't imagine ever turning someone down - sometimes I don't think of being the one to ask.  If I ever get to San Diego, I will email you & ask you to meet me at Starbucks...lol....

Christine---be sure you do contact me if you make it to San Diego--I will even throw in a free city tour ;0

Gary--Thanks for suggesting my post. I would love to meet you if you are ever here in S.D. How could we not spare an hour for coffee to "talk shop" with others in our industry??

As the other party in this excellent (and flattering) blog, what Deborah says is absolutely correct and 2011 should be the year that we all take the time to meet others in this industry because clients are gold and you never know when a referral will come your way.

I'm probably preaching to the choir but its a good reminder...Deborah has a business model that I have not come across and in speaking with her about it, a recent client of mine triggered what she was looking for...business 101 thanks to Deborah just opening up about what type of client she wants!

Not a real person
San Diego, CA

Seems like I met someone at a restaurant in downtown San Diego and talked about how we could help each other. Hmmm.

However, I think that in another 10 years, if not sooner, we won’t even have to leave our homes to meet other people because video blogging will be so prevalent. We probably won’t even need cars. Wouldn’t that be neat? No more dependence on foreign oil to finance countries that hate us.

Deborah, You are one clever writer. I love your dinosaur analogy.  I work entirely out of a home office and it sometimes does get lonely.  I make myself get out so I have contact with other REALTORS.

Russel-Thanks for stopping by my Blog. This industry has certainly changed, hasn't it?

Marchel-Thanks for your kind words. I do have to make it a point to set up meetings, since I too work from a home office. It does take effort but we can't forget we are in a "people business" after all is said and done.
