You know what I'm talking about. You walk into someones house for the first time and you notice an extraordinary number of pigs, unicorns, frogs, or ducks. They are all over the place in every shape and form you can think of.

I'm really not one to talk, a collection "happened" to me. I swear I didn't start it, all I did was buy a motorcycle. Two months later on my birthday, a friend bought me a Harley-Davidson t-shirt.

Every Christmas or birthday after that I received Harley calendars, socks, books, clocks, blankets, jackets, photo frames, boots, ornaments, Christmas stockings, kitchen towels, pot holders, cookie jar ... STOP!!

And then I made a REALLY big mistake. Mattel came out with the first Harley Barbie and I bought one for laughs. Uh oh, now I have Harley Barbie #1, #2, #3, #4, Harley Ken and Barbie's personal motorcycle, a Harley Fatboy.

There is a reason I'm telling this story. Personal collections are cute ... even I have one ... until you want to sell your house. Be prepared for your agent to suggest that you carefully pack up your collection before your home goes on the market. There are at least three good reasons to do this.

1) When buyers come to see your house with their children in tow, there is a good chance your precious "babies" will be admired with sticky little fumble fingers. !Crash!

2) Your agent will mention the importance of "de-cluttering" to help your home show its best. Personal collections fall into this category.

3) Your collection will distract the buyers. They will be looking at those cute little skunks instead of that really nice granite counter top you had installed last Summer.

Believe me, if you have a personal collection on display, that is the only thing the buyer will remember 15 minutes after they leave your house. You really don't want buyers to remember your beautiful home as the skunk house, now do you?

I think you're right, collections are great till...I collected porcelain dolls for my daughter for years until just recently when she let me know she doesn't like dolls. I have no idea what to do with them? Same thing with all the Disney Beta movies, and so on, and so on...

I don't have a problem with most collections, I too council my clients to pack them up. I don't understand the agents who don't tell their clients to pack up their porn collections. I showed one house, where nude pictures of the owners, in every position known to man, were in every room. The pictures were framed on the wall, under the glass on the coffee table. It was really embarrassing for me and my female client...

Ssssssynthia, those collections distract agents and buyers alike!  The seller has to pack to move, might as well get a head start and get the collections put away early!

I don't understand either why Sellers are so resistant to this advice either!

Cynthia- a very good point to remember.  I had a client with an egg collection from all of her world travels.  Eggs everywhere!!  Great until you decide to list your home.

Maria - things have a way of multiplying don't they?

Paul - OMG, now that is a collection that MUST be put away. ALL of it!

BLiz - you are right, the agent can't help but look too ... guilty as charged!

Christine - well, maybe some folks think that buyers will love their collection so much they will buy the house?

Kathy - love your tag line here ... actively raining thoughts! I'm sure those eggs were beautiful, BUT ...

Down here in the "Bible belt" there are a lot of sellers with a wall of crosses.  Even my God-fearing clients are distracted by the homage to keep Dracula away.  As they say, you can't please 100% of the people 100% of the time but you can do what you can to de-personalize!

Ssssssynthia this bring a new dimension to "what-nots".  As in what not to display when selling a home.

This is a good one Cynthia!! The personal affects of a seller do distract!!  And I can relate to the times when children have accompanied their parents (with my advice of them not).  Of course, we tour the homes with the collections!!  One 8-year old girl got a bad scoulding from her parents when she ran up to the 3' tall DOLLS that the woman collected, that were all over the house.  I felt bad for the little girl . . . who was just being a little girl in a house full of dolls!

Haha, a Harley Barbie. Does Barbie come with an open-face helmet? I'm not sure she would handle the bugs in her face very well at all.

Tricia - LOL, an entire wall?? Now THAT would certainly make you stop and look twice!

Charita - But Barbie is CUTE!

Carla - kids are always in tow when a "collection" house is on the buyers tour! And yes, there is nothing worse than to stumble on a grand doll collection and telling a little girl she can't touch ... INSTANT TEARS!!

Malcolm - you DO this to me every time! I never thought about the helmet and you made me look! Yes, she has an open faced helmet which is just so NOT Barbie ... LOL!

It's just better to go vanilla in my book and pack away the personal stuff although I've had some that absolutely would not put away John Wayne collections etc. and the buyer ended up including it in their offer!  That created its own set of problems.

Judi - I agree, vanilla is the way to go if possible. Well you have me convinced, those Barbie dolls are worth $600 (or used to be), I'm packing them away when the house goes on the market.

Hey Cynthia!  Been a littel M.I.A. here for a few days, but I'm squeezing in some time this afternoon.  At least it's not a Pee Wee Herman collection, or something similar...Oh what am I saying, it's all the same, right?  Also got a chuckle out of Tricia's comment (#7)...something you don't see around here too often.

David - A Pee Wee Herman collection would be hysterical!  And yes, distracting. Thanks for pointing out Tricia's comment, I didn't even see it. I guess because of the demarcation line from one day to the next?

A great post about depersonalization.  They (collections) are always great conversation starters with friends but when they are displayed to buyers - they do have a tendency to make fun or get turned off by them.

Thanks Renee, yes ... usually a collection garners a laugh or worse, a bad feeling about the home.
