Sellwood Park in the Sellwood district of Portland, Oregon (A hidden gem)

When we came across Sellwood Park, it was part of finding the United States’ largest hand panted mural, the Oak Bottom Wildlife Refuge, and striving to get a picture of the mural. It was lot of fun and the kids loved, I mean loved, this park!

This had all the things most parks have been taking out for safety, like a tire swing, teeter totters, large slide, and the most “deadly”, a merry-go-round. I’m sorry, I love merry-go-rounds and every kid I ever have known does also. (So please stop taking them out for safety, we lived and so will today’s kids.)

But, my kids ended up playing at this park before I finally decided it was time to go home and have the kids cook dinner for their mom. I got lots of, “Do we have to?” when I said we had to leave on this one and that is a good sign of how good a park it is.

Todd ~ We had a playground like this right on our street growing up.  I loved it then and now.  However, I don't think I can handle the spinning anymore.

It's the best expression 'do we have to' from kids...time in this park well spent.  Thanks for the chat & I appreciate your thoughts- i will need to strategize better now...alot of food for thought Mr. CLark!

Todd...you are such a good photographer. It's fun to see pictures of your kids as they grow. And..they will take THEIR kids to the park because of all the great memories you have provided.

Todd,

"This had all the things most parks have been taking out for safety, like a tire swing, teeter totters, large slide, and the most "deadly", a merry-go-round."

Ya!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It makes me wounder how Brenda and I survived? We grew up with all those things at grade school, some of them at home, and oh we were farm kids. Add horses, cattle, tractors, 50 tall barns, and 60 to a 100 foot tall silos! Just to name a few other hazards! I rode 10 to 50 miles a day all summer and I never wore a helmet, just a straw hat.

We may have been at risk, but I think we were better for it!

Todd, your kids are lucky, two parents that care and find them such delights.

Hi Todd - Like June, I know I could never handle the spinning anymore, but as I kid I loved it!  It is such a shame that most of the "see-saws" (as we called them) are now gone.

And did they cook dinner for their mother?  I hope so!

You keep writing about areas that my daughter lives in; I asked her about Sellwood park and she said "every time I'm in that neighborhood the park is always full."

Hi Todd, Thank for sharing this great photo story of Sellwood park. I was an enjoyable read and the photos say it all, everyone had fun. You are right about the merry-go-rounds. Just shows how litigious we have become in this country that people want to reduce their exposure at the expense of having fun growing up. Very sad and getting worse.

Todd - Those are neat photos of what appears to be a great place.  We notice some changes at parks in our area.  In recent years, we aren't seeing new swimming pools go in.  They seem to be installing spray parks instead.  Fewer park funds are available to man pools, and there is less exposure to litigation from spray parks.

What a great park.  You're right teeter totters and merry go rounds all gone.  Loved the merry go round as a kid - not so much as an 'old lady.'

Todd, I agree, why deprive these kids of the really fun toys and rides!  Great looking park!

The only thing I can figure out is that someone had a mom that wouldn't let them go on these and now they are going to make sure no one else does either.
