For those of you who live in California, I hope you have had the opportunity to catch Huell Howser on Public Television. Here in Southern California, he is on KCET and KOCE (Los Angeles and Orange County Public Stations).
Every evening, somewhere around six to eight pm, he has (reruns typically) of shows where he travels to unique spots in California and visits with folks, and it really does make you want to go there, no matter WHAT he is spotlighting.
Not long ago, Huell visited a California landmark in the heart of downtown Los Angeles called Phillippe's. This restaurant is located at the corner of Ord and Alameda streets, across from Grand Central (Train) Station, and right next to Historic Old Olvera Street, and only a couple of blocks from our famous Chinatown district of Los Angeles.
Now, having worked the first 5 years after high school only about a mile from this area, Phillippe's was a once a week visit, if I remember correctly.
Phillippe's is on a corner, and I am sure the building has been there a hundred years. There is sawdust on the floor, which gets changed every other day to comply with the health department. The counters are high, and the waitresses behind the counters all dress like they are still in the fifties.
Phillippe's serves beef, ham, lamb and turkey dip sandwiches. They are to die for, let me tell you. They have outstanding coleslow and potato salad, and the kosher pickles are a must. There are other items, such as pie and cheesecake. And, they serve a great breakfast, as well.
You stand in lines at the counter, order your food, get served right then, and go find a spot to sit at one of the many community tables. You could be sitting next to the mayor on one side and just one of the locals on the other. AND, they have never raised the price of a cup of coffee. They give you a cup of their fantastic coffee for only NINE CENTS.
If you are in the Los Angeles area, Phillippe's is a MUST VISIT. If it's good enough for me and Huell, it will be your favorite as well.
