Missing Summer in Hood River
It's destined to happen to me every winter. Once the holidays are long past and the snow has melted, leaving everything dirty and grey, I start to think about summer. Those thoughts have begun seeping into my days lately. It's even worse now that I live in the Hood River Valley because summers here are simply glorious. The two things that surprised me most when I was first introduced to the area were 1) it is a windsurfer's and water-lover's dream and 2) the region is rich in agriculture. I've lived in "tourist" towns before and at first thought Hood River to be in the same vein. It is, but only to a certain extent.
The Columbia River is practically in our front yard where locals and tourists alike flock when the weather's warm enough. The windsurfers/kiteboarders are the "die hards", heading when a good wind blows, whether it's frigid or not. Then we've got our "fruit loop", stop after stop of fruit stands selling everything from apples, pears, jams, pies etc. But it's even more than that. Our region is nationally known for it's pears and distributes those and other fruits nation-wide. Several wineries call this valley home, while berries, vegetables and flowers grace orchards up and down the valley.
I've included a summer picture of Hood River grape vines, backed by orchards, framing Mt. Hood. Also, here's a picture of a summer day at the beach. For now, I'll continue to yearn for those golden days of summer that are more than a little around the corner.
