Visit Butchertown Market in one of AOL’s Hottest Neighborhoods

If your idea of a great time is to take in some historic Louisville architecture, enjoy interesting shopping, and conclude the day with the best food and drink in Louisville, then you should head to the Butchertown Market.  Right across from the Swift Company, Butchertown Market is one of things that make Butchertown one of AOL's hottest neighborhoods.

Housed in an old leather tanning factory which in turn housed the  Magic Flake Soap Company, the Lampton Paint Company and then the Caudill Seed Company, the building at 1201 Story Avenue was bought by the Jakeland company in 1997.  Under the skillful hand of Andy Blieden , who loves to find and renovate old buildings and turn them green, the Market houses retail, office space, and light industrial space, plus has a restaurant across the street. As the result of a new $340,000 loan from the Department of Energy, Bliegen is adding new windows, replacing the HVAC system, adding skylights, and installing drywall and new doors.  These upgrades will reduce annual energy costs in the structure by $33,000.

•        Work The Metal  - frames, lamp shades, and mirrors from the retail side of Metalworks LLD, a Butchertown Market tenant that wholesale metal-decorated products

•        Canoe - Central American textiles, pottery, and jewelry

•        Moss Hill - bath and body products

•        Cellar Door Chocolates - gourmet candy

•        Bourbon Barrel Foods - gourmet sauces and seasonings made from Kentucky bourbon, formerly only available in specialty shops

•        Spectrum Site and Sound -  home theater and audio systems

Many first floor tenants of the Butchertown Market occupy an open space, which adds to a true European market flavor.  Other floors provide loft space for artists and antique shops.  There is plenty of space available for exciting new businesses.

Right across the street from the Market is another Blieden venture, the Blind Pig Restaurant.  A fitting tribute to the neighborhood roots in the meatpacking industry, the restaurant opened in a renovated building and serves hearty food.  Billing itself as "Butchertown's Premier Swine Dining Establishment," the Blind Pig serves shepherd's pie, made-on-site sausage, and cassoulet, as well as lighter fare including sandwiches and salads.

Butchertown , site of the new Bourbon Barrel Foods, is located along the Urban Bourbon trail, which promotes tasting Louisville's bourbon and products made with it.  Visitors can obtain a passport to visit nine popular bars and collect prizes along the way as they sample the best of Louisville.
