Two state parks are located in Frederick County

1.     Cunningham Falls State Park

Located in the Catoctin Mountains in just west of Thurmont in northern Frederick County, Cunningham Falls State Park encompasses 4950 acres. If you are looking to get away many activities await you in the park.

* Fishing- Enjoy wonderful fishing in park. There is Big Hunting Creek which is a catch-and-release trout stream limited to artificial fly fishing only. Great for catching a native brook trout. Little Hunting Creek in the Manor Area is a catch-and-release trout stream limited to the use of artificial lures only. Also don't forget about Hunting Creek Lake, 40 acre in size, that holds species such as bass, bluegill, catfish, and put-and-take trout. Remember to buy your fishing license before you go.

* Boating- Is permitted on the lake and has a boat ramp to launch from. Only electric motors are permitted and during the summer, canoes and rowboats are available for rental.

Swimming- In designated areas of the lake

* Hiking trails- Trails throughout the park offer those from easy to difficult. Don't forget to hike up to the 78 foot tall waterfall.

* Picnicking-Picnic areas are available in a couple areas in the park. Be sure to clean up your garbage.

* Camping-The park offers two camping areas: one with 140 campsites with both areas to pitch a tent and some cabins, and the other with 31 campsites. Bathhouses with showers are also available for those that wish not to rough it too much. Your can even visit the camp store to get groceries and other supplies.

2.     Gambrill State Park

Gambrill State Park encompasses 1,137 acres and is located just minutes from Frederick City. The park was donated by Frederick to the state in 1934 and named after James H. Gambrill, Jr., a Frederick resident and leading conservationist of natural resources.

The park offers excellent views of Frederick and Middletown Valley and the surrounding areas.

Activities in the park include

* Picnicking - Picnic tables, grills, pavilions, restrooms and playground facilities are available at Gambrill State Park. The park also have a few buildings/pavilions available for rent, including one called the Tea room which can accommodate about 75 people and even has a kitchen for cooking.

* Trails - A variety of trails ranging in difficultly exist in the park open to hiking, mountain biking, and horseback riding. Enjoy the beautiful rock outcroppings and nature as you

* Camping - Some camping is permitted in designated locations that even have a  washhouse with  hot water showers for those wanting to refresh after a hard days hike. The park also offers four camper cabins.
