Since Alberto's Bicycles left Winnetka over 15 years ago, we've been without a dedicated bicycle shop (with the exception of T.L. Fritts Sporting Goods which carries bikes.) So now a former employee of Alberto's has opened Green Bay Cycles at the coveted spot where the dress boutique, Young in Heart, used to be.
Co-owners Larry Faulkner and Sam Mack opened the store in December and have been keeing busy with bicycle repairs and maintenance, and are looking forward to warmer months when people will begin purchasing bikes. They carry two main brands of everyday bikes: Giant Bikes (whose frames are used by most of the competition) and Nirve beach cruisers which are simple, fun, and a blast to ride.
As far as racing bikes, they also carry the Belgian brand Eddy and the Italian line of Guerciotti. They also have a full line of children's and toddler's bikes and tricycles.
Larry retired from the Navy after 20 years as an aircraft mechanic, then he worked at Alberto's Bikes followed by Higher Gear in Wilmette, but always hoped to open his own store. Sam has worked in bike stores since he was 14 years old and he and Larry decided to combine efforts and open Green Bay Cycles. With so many vacant storefronts littered throughout Winnetka and Wilmette, Larry was able to secure some nice concessions and his landlord and the Village of Winnetka officials bent over backwards to help them open the store.
Larry and Sam want to make it simple for you. If you have a bike that needs a tune up or some repairs, just call and they'll pick it up and deliver it free of charge. In addition to bikes, they also carry a good selection of bike paraphanalia including helmets, spinning equipment, bike wear, nutritional supplements, seats, bells and bike path maps. If you want to bring your existing bike inside for riding, they sell indoor trainers that adapt the bike to a stationary positioln. They also plan to begin selling spinning bikes sometime later this year.
