I just GOTTA get me some of that there "Facebook!" Feeling It Less and Less....

Great.  News Flash from CNN Money:  Now when someone asks me to "Like" them on Facebook, I can suddenly become a full-blown testimonial.
Without any control.  Without the ability to Opt Out.  Without realizing it.  But, possibly not without caring.

Not liking.  Not feeling it.

What now?  I can't innocently "Like" someone unless I do a background check, see if they pick up after their dog, and sniff them for B.O.?
And I need to be extremely careful in my comments so when Facebook churns my words, I give them nothing to work with.

And GOOG wants to compete with this mess?  What fun!

Facebook is like grammer school that way. You tell someone you like a girl and all of a sudden you are going steady, and you never even talked to the girl. Nice post.

I think Facebook is overdone.  Sure, it's a great way to connect with friends and family but as a medium to drive real estate leads, no way.  I don't know of anyone who has ever gotten business by setting up a Facebook business presence, having 100 people "like" it, and then getting some leads.  I think Facebook is better used for social aspects and not for business.

John,

Thanks.  It seems that at some point, like grammar school, everyone has to attend Facebook...

Bryan,

I think there are so many non-commercialized ways to connect with friends and family with some privacy and integrity in the operation, that I really do not see the benefit of Facebook for that experience.

Mike: Thanks for this post, and I appreciate John & Bryan weighing in too. In all the Social Media training I've taken FB seems to be a 'have to', but I here what you say - and what John & Bryan are saying. Hmm.....

Ellen,

Seems simple enough to me!  And you are welcome!

Mike, I had not heard that about FB, but I have to say I love it!  Its a way for me to talk to past clients and hopefully future ones too.  I have been lucky enough to be able to help several friends get referrals and when I have a client say something nice like I hope you sell their home as fast as you did ours....thats AWESOME!

Shawna,

Your point is good, but I just like to opt into stuff, rather than have it done beyond my control, with my photo, etc.

I can't say that I have any complaints with FB at all. Sure they change the platform around once in awhile...but I trust their reasoning for doing so. It is putting food on the table and paying bills....something that I have not accomplished yet with Active Rain.

I actually see there being far more control with what I am doing and how I engage in FB. Sounds like your privacy settings are wide open if you are being forced into things. Possibly?

It certainly is a personal preference. I have an amazing network on Facebook and I have been able to brand myself quite well there....without even discussing Real Estate.

Julia,

Actually, I have my FaceBook privacy dialed down very tight, I think.  Any tighter, and I may as well delete.

My first and largest error was friending anyone who asked, and now have a lot of exposure on my personal profile page that ought to be for friends and family.  There is a LOT of drivel posted that I just don't get into.
And I didn't get a business page going.  Yet.

But, FB has been so very cavalier about privacy, it is hard to get excited.  But, I think we are entering an era where privacy will be devalued to be meaningless, and FB is a catalyst in the movement in that direction.

AR has helped me meet people, and has provided me very good SEO opportunities, particularly when coupled with my efforts on other sites, and I really don't mind talking real estate.  It is what I do to make a living.

If you are talking about Real Estate to Real Estate individuals....it's Okay...they all do it and don't mind. They understand your lingo. LOL Now the general public....they may not appreciate it.

We all have our different ways of how do business. No one can say that you are wrong...or that I am right. You can say what works for YOU....and I can say what works for me. Being me works for me...my own goofy ways of doing things and postings in Fb allow people to see I am human like them. More importantly I am interested in what they are about....and what they are looking for. I have my daily routine of Connecting people to perfect matches. Networking is a powerful thing.

I do not have a business page on FB for Real Estate....I administer several others. The main one being for a Business Networking site (Perfect Networker) that I am partnered in.

Glad to hear you have the privacy tabs buttoned down tight.
