Peachtree Hills Place raises the bar on tree protection in development

ATLANTA – (September 18, 2007) – Isakson Barnhart, Atlanta’s developer of luxury communities offering a continuum of care for those ages 62 and older, is setting a new standard in responsible development in Atlanta. The organization’s aggressive tree save initiative at its Peachtree Hills Place location will not only preserve 50 percent of the trees on-site, but it will serve as the pilot program for a tree protection certification program for construction workers.

“We are making an environmental statement with Peachtree Hills Place by protecting trees and sponsoring the development of a curriculum that has the potential to impact the entire industry,” said E. Andrew (Andy) Isakson, Managing Partner of Isakson Barnhart. “Our efforts are unprecedented for a project of this magnitude.”

Isakson Barnhart intends to save 50 percent or more of the total caliper inches of existing mature trees on the 23.5 acre-site in Buckhead. The plans include an urban forest and nature trail on approximately six acres, which will be placed under a protective environmental deed covenant with The Chattahoochee Nature Center. When the development is complete, its 274 homes and amenities will fill approximately 900,000 square feet, or about the size of Phipps Plaza.

As part of its effort, Isakson Barnhart is sponsoring the development of a course for construction personnel. The Chattahoochee Nature Center, under the leadership of head naturalist Henning Von Smelling, will train every superintendent and equipment operator working on the site. Each worker will be required to take a course and pass a test on subjects that include water quality, tree protection and general ecology. The program envisions construction workers who have a greater understanding and appreciation of the environment being more sensitive to water quality and tree protection construction site issues. Graduates will receive a green hard hat and ball cap to wear as they work. Isakson hopes that other Atlanta developers will adopt the program as well.

“We’re fortunate to transform a section of Atlanta that is full of mature trees. We are doing all we can to respect the surrounding community and the environment by retaining all of the healthy trees we can,” he said. “As many of Atlanta’s intown areas are being redeveloped, we challenge other developers to follow suit. Along with the Chattahoochee Nature Center, we’re setting up the framework to make it happen.”

Peachtree Hills Place will eventually become home to those who seek to live a secure, independent lifestyle with on site access to continuum of care options. When completed, Peachtree Hills Place will include 274 independent residences – consisting of 266 villas and eight single-family homes – and 36 skilled nursing and memory care suites. Assisted living care will also be offered on site. All Peachtree Hills Place members will enjoy a full slate of amenities, on-site retail establishments, dining, full service spa, and fitness center.

Isakson Barnhart is Georgia’s developer of nationally recognized, award-winning residential communities for those age 62 and over. The company’s vision to provide amenity-rich, independent living for discerning adults was born out of the personal experiences of the family of Ed and Julia Isakson after their difficult search for a community that would provide an active lifestyle combined with on-site health care. This mission manifested itself in Park Springs, the company’s flagship property in Stone Mountain. Park Springs was nationally recognized by the 50+ Housing Council of the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) as the recipient of the 2005 Platinum Award for best large CCRC as well as the Gold Award for interior design. Now, Isakson Barnhart introduces another award-winning residential community in Peachtree Hills Place, named the best “On the Boards” large CCRC by the same group in 2006. Isakson Barnhart has carefully selected Life Care Services, LLC, the leading management company of senior communities in the nation, to partner in the planning and management of Peachtree Hills Place and Park Springs.
