I was meme'd by Joey Aszterbaum and I was asked to write a book meme.  I called this my "very best" book meme, because it is my first and only book meme.  Well, here goes nothing:

The Bible

I don't know that I really need to do a lot of explaining on this one.  I finished my first complete reading of the Bible a couple of months ago.  I even wrote one of my first blogs about this topic here:

How to Finish the Bible in Two and Half Short Years

Looking at the timing of this post, apparently I immediately took up blogging upon finishing my reading.  I hadn't noticed that before!

 The Stand by Stephen King

This book had a way of sticking with me long after I read it.  I was a big Stephen King fan for awhile, and I think many of his books qualify as actual literature now.  As an aside, the miniseries that they made was one of the better book adaptations to come along (seemed faithful to the original text).  My wife and I still comment on things from this book, such as "M-O-O-N, that spells book."  You have to read it to understand that last sentence.  I also finished the "Dark Tower" series, which was a big commitment of time, but worth it in my opinion.

A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius by Dave Eggers

This is a memoir that I loved!  I actually found myself mourning a little bit when I finished it, because I felt like I was living with the author as he told his story.  It's about a young man who is mentoring his younger brother following the surprising loss of BOTH parents to cancer within about a month of each other, yet it is very engaging and funny.  You will feel like you know this man and his brother.  This is highly recommended reading, and it is the type of writing that I aspire to personally.  That reminds me - I need to get Eggers' latest book, which came out earlier this year.

Everything Bad Is Good for You: How Today's Popular Culture Is Actually Making Us Smarter by Steven Johnson

Mr. Johnson is actually a terrific and interesting science writer.  This book inspired me to buy all of his books, and I think I still have one more to go.  The review on Amazon says it best, as it states that the author tackles "the belief that video games, television shows, and other forms of popular entertainment are detrimental to Americans' cognitive and moral development. Everything Good builds a case to the contrary that is engaging, thorough, and ultimately convincing."  Read this to expand your thinking a little bit.  It turns out that shows like "24" make us think harder because of their complex, intertwined plots.

Blue Like Jazz by Donald Miller

Miller is a very laid-back and funny Christian author, who shoots from the hip and simply writes what he feels.  We bought several copies of this book and gave it out to our friends, both Christian and non-Christian.  It is worth taking a look at this one.  Engaging, light, and humorous!  Give it a shot - it is an easy read, in my opinion.

Harvard Education in a Book by Harvard Lampoon

In a nutshell, if you want to know how my particular sense of humor works, read this book.  This is the funniest book that I have EVER read (I think I read it in 1991 or 1992) and my wife and I still make jokes related to this book fifteen years later.  One sample when discussing former Presidents: "FDR was a coltish roustabout with a freakishly large and dandified upper body."  The last time I checked, this book was a little obscure and hard to find, but it is worth the hunt in my opinion.  I even had trouble finding a cover shot, but I found some cheap copies on Amazon.

Well, that seems like a decent list for now.  I wanted desperately to copy Joey's Lord of the Rings Trilogy, but I decided to abstain from that.  I need to keep some ammo just in case I get meme'd again!  I would like to "book meme" the following AR friends:

Paul Slaybaugh

Shannon Lefevre

Ginger Wilcox

23 Comments on My Very Best Book Meme!

At your service, Jason!  I'll give it a shot.  I'm a big fan of The Stand, and made it through the majority of the Dark Tower as well.  I fell off somewhere along the way as I got tired of waiting 3 years (seemingly) between books.  Too difficult to remember what was happening in the series.  I'm looking forward to this meme.

Paul - Thanks for playing along.  I am guessing that you will write an entertaining and intriguing meme.  I look forward to it as well!

The books we read tell a story about us....  You have a lot of variety there....  I used to be a big fan of Stephen King as well.

SALLY - I agree with you.  I can always tell a lot about someone by looking at the books on their shelves (assuming they actually have books).  Thanks for your comments!

Jason, I loved the book Blue Like Jazz, great book. Also love the bible too. I'll have to pick up Everything bad that happens to you is Good. That sounds interesting. I think I know you  better now.

Jason, thanks for the book suggestions.  I've always hesitated to read Stephen King mostly because I am not a big fan of the horror genre and just never really got into the idea of reading these types of stories.  Most of my reading is non-fiction, though I do enjoy the occasional spy novel or mystery.  But, I think that you are right that many of King's books probably now are considered "literature."  Perhaps when I have some time, I'll give King a try.  The Harvard Education in a Book sounds like fun too!

Jason,

I also liked the Stand, What a wide variety and well rounded too. Sounds like you are what you read.

Great job, Jason.  I would definitely give King some credit as an author.  He wrote some shorter novels under the name Richard Bachman that I really enjoyed.  One of them, The Body, was turned in to the great film Stand By Me with River Phoenix.

Blue Like Jazz was good.  But if you're looking for something a little left-of-center from that type of author, I'd be curious what you would make of the "A New Kind of Christian" trilogy from Brian McLaren.

Wow Jason!  This post makes me feel kinda dumb...I only recognize one title and thank GOD, I recognized that one...Literally speaking...I'll have to give those others a shot!  I'll get started on mine right now.  :)

I am just finishing a series for the second time so I am looking for something to read.  I am on book 11 of the Wheel of Time reading it the second time. It is kind of bittersweet though as the author (my favoiter author) Robert Jorday passed away this last Sunday so who knows if it will ever get finished but if you like the Lord of the Rings you might like it also.

I will keep your books in mind.  The only one that I have read is the bible and that is an ongoing read.  I would be lying if I said I had read the whole thing; although I keep trying.

MISSY - Thanks for your comments (as always).  The "Everything Bad" book is very interesting, at least it was to me.  I am glad that you feel like you know me better.  I actually think I learned a little bit about myself just from writing this post.

Hi Jason, OK loved The Stand. I've read the Bible cover to cover 4 times(4 different versions). Blue Like Jazz I just read a couple of months ago. I thought it was good but not great. I haven't read the other 3 so will have to look into them.

Right now I'm reading AR member Jennifer Allan's "Sell with Soul". Plato's "Republic" , "The Message" and Jason Crouch's Blog. :)

BRIAN - This may sound a little snotty to others, but I think you are smart enough to appreciate the "Harvard Education" book.  It is a different brand of humor, to be sure.  As for Stephen King, I like his newer stuff better than his traditiional horror books.  I actually think you would like the Stephen Johnson book, since you seem to be a thinker.

09/19/2007 06:46 PM by Jason Crouch, Broker - Austin Texas Real Estate (Austin Texas Homes, LLC)

DONNA - Thanks for your comments and for the compliment.  There were tons of books that I thought about including, but those will have to wait for the next meme, unless I decide to write about them individually.  Yes, we are all "what we read", aren't we?

JOEY - Thanks for the suggestions.  Another good short book by King is "The Long Walk".  I read it in one sitting a few years ago.  Very interesting premise there.  As we discussed earlier, I will check out the McLaren books, especially since they are already on my shelf at home.

SHANNON - I look forward to reading your book meme.  I know that it will be entertaining and it will give us a glimpse of your fun personality!  Thanks for participating!

09/19/2007 06:53 PM by Jason Crouch, Broker - Austin Texas Real Estate (Austin Texas Homes, LLC)

MARCHEL - Thanks for reading and commenting here.  I saw that Robert Jordan passed away a few days ago, but I didn't realize that the series wasn't finished.  I need to look into reading those books.  As for the Bible, I really want to read it in chronological order next.

09/19/2007 06:55 PM by Jason Crouch, Broker - Austin Texas Real Estate (Austin Texas Homes, LLC)

BRYANT - That is awesome - I am actually interested in reading "The Message" as well.  What do you think of it so far?  I don't know that "Blue Like Jazz" was a phenomenal book, but it is an interesting one to share with non-believers.  Donald Miller has a nice conversational style that I liked.  Have you read "Velvet Elvis" by Rob Bell yet?

09/19/2007 06:58 PM by Jason Crouch, Broker - Austin Texas Real Estate (Austin Texas Homes, LLC)

The message is pretty good. Very easy to read and is a great tool for folks that haven't read the Bible or feel the KJV may be too difficult to get through. I like it. Have you read Elie Wiesel's 'The Night Trilogy"? If not you need to. Now that's a book!!! It will break your heart.

09/19/2007 07:03 PM by Bryant Tutas-Tutas Towne Realty, Inc

BRYANT - That's cool.  I may even pick up a copy of the Message on the way home.  Yes, I read Elie Wiesel's trilogy, and I felt like my heart was being wrenched from my chest.  Terrific books.  If you like stuff that will surely make you cry, you should read "Same Kind of Different as Me", which was just published within the past year.  The subtitle alone should make you curious: "A Modern-Day Slave, an International Art Dealer, and the Unlikely Woman Who Bound Them Together".  This book made me cry for 30 solid pages near the end.  This book came recommended to me from one of my friends, Jesse Reeves.  Jesse is the co-writer of the song "How Great is Our God" with Chris Tomlin.

Jason:

Great post as always.  I am still reading the Bible, I don't think I will ever finish it, I don't care how many times I read it.  I read The Stand twice, a lot of C S Lewis and everything Terry Brooks has ever written.  I'm going to check out some of the other books you mentioned.

09/19/2007 07:25 PM by Ray Perry; Realtor, CRS, GRI, e-PRO (CPS Country Air)

RAY - Thanks for your comments.  I agree - you never really "finish" the Bible.  I have read all of it once.  C.S. Lewis is really terrific stuff - "Mere Christianity" is another favorite.  I am not actually familiar with Terry Brooks, but I Googled him just now.  I guess I should read some of his books!  You might also enjoy the book I recommended to Bryant just above your comment.

Jason, honestly I buy books faster than I can read them.  I'm almost an obsessive book buyer!  However, currently my time on Active Rain is actually detracting from my time to read offline :)

09/20/2007 07:47 PM by Brian Block -- Northern Virginia & D.C. Real Estate (RE/MAX Allegiance)

BRIAN - You and I have a lot in common.  Books are my real vice.  I can't go anywhere near a book sale or bookstore without picking up a few things.  We have an absurd number of books in our home, and our kids have almost as many as we do now.  I have been the same way lately - Active Rain is taking away from book time.  I was actually planning to meme you for this one, but I found your post from August, and I didn't want to make you do it again this quickly.
