Buying a Home with a Pool vs. Buying a Home with a Yard Large Enough to Install a Pool Later

If you are planning on buying a home with a pool in the Houston area, you may be tossing around the idea of buying a home that already has a pool vs. buying a home that has a yard large enough to install your own pool after you move in.

Buying a Home with a Pool Houston, TX

Usually, buying a home with pool already installed, is the better investment.  It could save you $10,000 or so, maybe more.   It often costs well over $25,000 to install a pool and the concrete around it.  And, of course, you can spend a lot more than that if you want.  If you are buying a home with a pool already installed, it's possible you may only pay an extra $10,000 to $15,000 for the home and, assuming the pool is newer or in good shape, you have saved $10,000 or more. ( These numbers are generalizations only -- the newer, larger or fancier the pool, the more value it may be given.)

Buyers often wonder if buying a home with a pool is a good investment or not.  There's not an across-the-board answer, but there are some neighborhoods in which homes with pools sell faster than the homes without pools.  And then again, there are some people that specifically don't want a pool.  It also depends on if you want a pool and if you would use it -- if not, I wouldn't plan on buying a home with a pool.  It's your home and you have to be the one happy living there -- also, there are expenses related to buying a home with a pool.

I have to admit that in Houston, especially in the summer months, a pool is very enticing to buyers!  Pools in the Houston area can sometimes be used well over six months, just depending on the weather in any given year.

Go with the large yard and design your own backyard with water fall and salt water pool - its the best.

It's a tough choice but I would probably take the yard over the pool. There's maintenance costs associated with both but the pool is probably more expensive.

Hi Nor, It's always fun to design your own.

Victor,  I agree, pools are more expensive.  Here in Houston, it's just a lot more economical to purchase a home that already has a pool IF that's what you want -- some people are like you and would prefer the yard -- not everyone wants a pool.

Howdy and evening to you Joyce

Joyce, reckon having a pool could be mighty nice. But folks also need to take into account the cost and time of the up keep of them, when they are looking at a home that comes with a pool. Very few homes in my area have a pool. I actually prefer going swimming in a lake, pond or river. We have a real fine river right down the road, which I can swim across and be in Vermont.

Have a good one

Hi Dale, That's funny - being able to swim across the river and be in another state!  Here people usually either really want a pool or they don't.  Not too many are flexible on it.  It's not that convenient here to go swimming in lakes, ponds or rivers -- of course, that depends on what part of the Houston area you are in.

Great info Joyce. I personally bought a home a few years ago intending to put a pool in. Now looking back I am kicking myself for not buying the home that already had the pool. It is so much wiser to reap the benefits of someone else's investment and labor when it comes to buying pool homes.

Hi Keisha, That's the way it is in the Houston area, too.
