Buying a Home with a Pool vs. Buying a Home with a Yard Large Enough to Install a Pool Later
If you are planning on buying a home with a pool in the Houston area, you may be tossing around the idea of buying a home that already has a pool vs. buying a home that has a yard large enough to install your own pool after you move in.
Usually, buying a home with pool already installed, is the better investment. It could save you $10,000 or so, maybe more. It often costs well over $25,000 to install a pool and the concrete around it. And, of course, you can spend a lot more than that if you want. If you are buying a home with a pool already installed, it's possible you may only pay an extra $10,000 to $15,000 for the home and, assuming the pool is newer or in good shape, you have saved $10,000 or more. ( These numbers are generalizations only -- the newer, larger or fancier the pool, the more value it may be given.)
Buyers often wonder if buying a home with a pool is a good investment or not. There's not an across-the-board answer, but there are some neighborhoods in which homes with pools sell faster than the homes without pools. And then again, there are some people that specifically don't want a pool. It also depends on if you want a pool and if you would use it -- if not, I wouldn't plan on buying a home with a pool. It's your home and you have to be the one happy living there -- also, there are expenses related to buying a home with a pool.
I have to admit that in Houston, especially in the summer months, a pool is very enticing to buyers! Pools in the Houston area can sometimes be used well over six months, just depending on the weather in any given year.
