Florida's SUNPASS

Florida's SUNPASS

Living in "The Sunshine State" has its advantages and disadvantages just like every other State. Anyone that lives in South Florida would probably agree that one big disadvantage is; there just TOO MANY TOLL BOOTHS. Having to slow down, stop, and pay a toll just to continue onto your destination can be a real drag! Not only is this a friendly reminder that we're continuously contributing to the lovely "tax pot" several times a day; the constant "STOP-GO!" can be just plain annoying.

If you are mostly mobile; hopefully you've invested in a Sunpass. This eases the stress of stopping every so often; and digging around to find coins, or money in general.

On the bright side; February 19th, 2011 will be the start of a new "Sunpass" system. We will still pay tolls (of course), but without the annoying process of stopping and fumbling around to find money. Paying tolls will be done electronically via Sunpass cards or transponders.

Your options will be to purchase a sunpass and pre-load it; or not. Either way, gone are the days of stop, pay, go. If you don't have a sunpass; the picture of your vehicle and tag will be taken, and you will be billed as a result. However; the charges will be higher for those without a sunpass. Those in rental cars will have to make arrangements with the rental company in regard to what options they will have to pay tolls.

Even though Florida's new toll system will begin on just a portion of Florida's Turnpike; it may be beneficial to purchase a sunpass whether you're a Florida resident or just visiting. Sunpass holders will be able to take advantage of special perks such as airport parking.
