Perhaps one of Smith Mountain Lake’s big claims to fame is its connection to a handful of Hollywood personalities and productions. The popular 1991 comedy, “What About Bob?”, used a Smith Mountain Lake house and backdrop for many of its scenes. Several well known actors, authors and athletes have made visits to and even purchased and lived at properties on the lake, occurrences that are exciting for local residents but never surprising - after all, we know how special SML is.

The latest Hollywood connection has had locals buzzing for a couple of years. Film production company Life Out Loud Films, LLC, recently wrapped up filming a movie at Smith Mountain Lake starring Jane Seymour, Ben Savage, Sean Patrick Flanery, Jeff Fahey and several other familiar talents. The film company’s Founder, Producer, Creative Director and actress Sara Elizabeth Timmins received inspiration for the film from spending time at Smith Mountain Lake in the winter of 2007.

Not only is the film, “Lake Effects”, featuring footage completely from Smith Mountain Lake, the entire project is intended to be a community effort, allowing local personalities, businesses and culture to influence production and gain recognition.
