Lexington OktoberFest a bust in ’11? -  Lexington won’t celebrate its annual fall festival this year without more help from the community. Town Council called for a one year hiatus to its two decade old celebration while organizers look at restructuring the event. Organizers are seeking more community help with the family event. “We are taking a year off to re-evaluate the festival and make it something more germane to the town’s heritage,” Mayor Randy Halfacre said recently. He said changes could include combining the celebration with other events and scaling back to one day. The 20 year old festival started as a family celebration weekend call Lexington FunFest. In 2010 it was changed to OktoberFest to honor the town’s heritage. Organizers say more community help is needed to stage the event. “It takes a lot of manpower to put on a festival. We need some new blood,” said Lori Moroz, a leader of the group that puts on the annual festival. Moroz expects the hiatus to be short. “This is not a permanent closure, she said. “Dates have already been set for an October festival this year. If more community help comes along now, there is a possibility the festival can go on in 2011.”

Marine continues to amaze - Lance Corp. Kyle Carpenter left rehab in Roanoke, VA in the pre dawn hours of Tuesday. He was headed back to Bethesda, MD for more surgery. The son of Jim and Robin Carpenter continues to mend from catastrophic wounds received last November in Afghanistan. SLED investigating missing money from Treasurer’s Office – The State Law Enforcement Division is looking into the disappearance of about $15,000 from the Lexington County Treasurer’s Office. According to the county’s 2009-10 audit, money received from taxpayers was improperly diverted without management review of how the funds were handled. “A clerk took advantage of business or personal relationships to obtain supervisory approval without the supervisor performing their due diligence and follow-up procedures,” the audit said. That action resulted in about $15,000 in cash transactions that were not deposited into the county’s bank account, the audit said. Two employees were fired after the missing cash was discovered. Those involved with handling the money were not identified.
