JFK Elementary School in Canton MA to present Robin Hood
If you do not realize it already, I am a big supporter of the performing arts in Canton MA and in the Canton Public Schools. I am a true believer that it is important to be well-rounded and for kids to have exposure to all different areas.
Canton is lucky in that it has an excellent performing arts department. It has excellent teachers, support from the administration and support from the parents and community at large. I have written about this before in previous articles.
Every year each elementary school in Canton puts on a play, usually a musical. This is not a typical kids play where the lines are fed to them and it is done during school. It is performed on the "big stage" at Canton High, with sound, lights and the works. There is a small stipend for the director, who chooses, casts and directs the play. The rest of the production (scheduling, costumes, stage crew, advertising, etc.) is put together solely through volunteer efforts of the parents. Each elementary school's CAPT (Canton Assocation of Parents and Teachers) supports the play financially, usually covering the money for expenses, which are usually made back through ticket sales and program advertisements.
It is a lot of work but there is a lot of reward. For some students, this may be the only time they get on stage. For others, this exposure is their first bite of the acting bug and they are opened up of a whole new world. Regardless of whether the students go on to be performers or whether this is a one-time experience, it is an experience they can draw on for the rest of their lives. It involves teamwork in working as part of a cast, homework in memorizing lines and songs, overcoming stage fright and learning to speak in front of a large, live audience. These are skills that can be used and drawn upon forever. It is impressive to see what 10 year olds can pull off when they work together!
This weekend Canton's John F. Kennedy School is presenting this year's fifth grade play Robin Hood. Performances are tonight and tomorrow night at 7:00 p.m. at Canton High's Morse Auditorium. A classic tale known to all, this is a great family event. Younger students enjoy seeing their slightly older classmates up on stage and most look forward to when they are in fifth grade and can be part of the play. If you are looking for something fun and different to do with your kids this cold January weekend, consider taking in one of the two perofrmances of Robin Hood put on by Canton's Kennedy School 5th Graders.
