Some People Just Get Relationships.

I flew to Omaha Monday to give a Web 2.0 presentation. The invitation to do so was extended by Nate Dodge and Mike Riedmann of NP Dodge Real Estate. They are tremendous hosts and organized a great showing at the Omaha Marriott. After the presentation, I went back to their main office to meet with their residential real estate management team, including Jodee Drake-Soto and Robert Wiebusch.

When I walked into the conference room, there was an NP Dodge backpack sitting on one of the chairs. Mike said it was for me, "just a thank you," he said. I unzipped the top and couldn't believe what I saw.

I Saw A Packet Of Little Girl's Underwear

NP Dodge Underwear For AfricaI didn't go any further. I couldn't. I was so moved by the thought that went into the gift, that my throat began to swell and my eyes began to water. I'm usually not at a loss for words, but at that moment I feared that opening my mouth would also open up the flood gates.

Why? Because the only way they could have known to put children's underwear in that backpack was if they had been reading my wife's Mothers Fighting For Others blog. They knew my wife was going to Africa in 10 days and they also knew she had started an Underwear For Africa drive.

The orphanage my wife, Rocky, is going to work in identified underwear as their greatest need and Rocky later found clean underwear is a major need in Africa. So, Underwear For Africa was born. Jodee was the one who got the task of shopping for the underwear. I could tell by the look on her face, she enjoyed it, even if Robert Weibusch had teased her about ditching work to go underwear shopping.

They knew, without ever asking me, what was going to bring me the most joy.

The web made it possible. The irony in that is killing me. But their desire to build a lasting relationship is what made it happen. I meet lots of great people as I travel around the country, but the team at NP Dodge completely blew me away with their care and kindness. When I got home, I learned there were lots of pairs of underwear in the bag. I wasn't surprised.

NP Dodge Gets Relationships

Nate, Mike, Robert, Jodee and everyone on the NP Dodge team... from the bottom of my heart, thank you.

A very touching post - it is a special moment when someone really gets into our world and we know that a deep connection has happened - it is not an ordinary moment or it wouldn't bring us to tears - I have had those moment but all too rarely.

Jeff:

Can we start an underwear campaign on Active Rain?  Where can we send shoe boxes full of underwear?

We did something like this several years ago for refugees.

Actually, the backpacks are a cool idea because the kids can use those too.

Thomas... thank you, but I was truly moved by how much time they took to find out what was important to me and my family. The web makes that easier to do, but you still have to actually do it.

Sherry... thank you.

Mary... she's actually leaving for 21 days. She leaves on 9/28 and will be there for three weeks working at an all girls orphange, St. Monica's Children's Home, just outside of Nairobi, Kenya. This is a dream she's had for a long time and the day is almost here. It's very exciting for all of us. The kids are going to miss her, but we know that when she returns, she's going to light the world on fire. :) [who am I kidding... I'm the one who's really going to miss her!]

Jeff, that is so cool. An act of kindess like this would for sure bring me to tears. The generousity of some people is incredibly moving.

I read about Underwear for Africa just the other day on Muthahood.com and I can't tell you how touched I was by Rocky's post. I am not a mother (yet) but I am totally on board to spread the word.

You and Rocky are truly an inspiration to me (and others). Thank you to you both for all your hard work, passion and dedication.

Aziz... that may require an entire post in itself. But here's a tidbit... Web 2.0 is a concept, not a thing. Basically, it’s a term used to describe the transition from the Internet as lot of different, staic websites, to a true dynamic and interactive computing platform. Some see it as a technical revolution, others as a social revolution, but it's all tied to interaction.

Jeff,

This post puts things in perspective.  No matter how hard we have it in America, we are so lucky compared to those struggling in the poorest parts of the world.  It is also amazing that technology allowed the folks you were visiting to know what was most important to you before you had even met.  I wish your wife luck in her worthwhile endeavor.

That is a very touching tribute to what you and your wife have done without making a big production of it.  My husband and I are both very active members of Rotary International and receive a great deal of satisfaction from our service without all the public recognition.  Karen

Hi everyone, I would like to correct something. My husband and I are Rotary International members. Rotary is encouraging people to do just what Jeff and his wife  are:  go out and make a difference in the world. Rotary does not strive to seek attention form doing it. However, well placed publicity will speed a project along. The Rotary Polio Plus program is a good example of that. We paired with the World Health Organization and Unicef and any other local group that was willing to help us to achieve our goal. I think Mr Turner and his wife both deserve a hearty congratulations from us in Rotary for truely fulfilling our motto of Service above Self, they are serving a huge need and via this blog they are getting relief to an area of need. Jeff we should talk about some potential Rotary partnerships that might be forged.

Jeff, this solidifies everything you've ever taught me.

Rocky's Africa Blog is really getting to me... I really can't wait until we can both go together!  You're a great Dad and great husband.  Rearing 6 kids while your wife is away is no easy task, but we both know how much this means to Rocky so I know that you wouldn't have had it any other way.

I'm trying to fill Rocky's shoes at MFFO and so far so good.  It feels good to be more involved.  I have a feeling this trip is going to have us bridging the distance across two worlds.

I promised Rocky that I would blog on my real estate page every day while she was gone, and even though I don't have a perfect tract record.... I'm really making and effort.

Action... that is the key to making things change.
