Tipping Large at the Carwash--Pay It Forward

By
Real Estate Broker/Owner with Charlemagne International Properties BRE# 01147470

The carwash is an integral part of the Los Angeles lifestyle.  I wash my car, or rather I have my car washed, almost as often as I wash my hair because I feel better when both are clean.  I am grateful for the convenience and ease of pulling in, hopping out of the car and twenty minutes later driving away in a sparkling clean car.

The carwashes are staffed with minimum wage workers who clean and buff cars all day long.  I always tip, but last week I tipped large and the young man assigned to my car deserved it.  He was meticulous in his attention to detailing the interior and exterior--no drip was allowed to dry on the windows or mirrors.  He cared about doing a good job, and I rewarded him with a tip that reflection my appreciation for going above and beyond my expectations.  His smile and a car ready for the work week ahead were my rewards.

My "mobile office" was ready for another week of selling real estate in Palos Verdes.

Good for you. I think more people should be appreciative of those who go above & beyond what they job duties call for.

Tom - A past client made a lasting impression on me when she called me to her "deathbed" and handed me a check for a job well done.  She said she was rewarding people in her life who went above and beyond their job duties.  I sold her house and although I did not feel I did anything unusual she said it was the best real estate experience of her life.  I honor her when I recognize others who do their job with their highest and best effort.

What a nice thing to do. We know what they do at the carwash is hard and that so many times their work goes unnoticed unless they make a mistake.  You made that guys day!

Elizabeth - I'm always amazed at the number of people who get in their car and drive away without so much as a "Thank you."  And, of course, they leave no tip.

I used to own a carwash Norma, and some of my most frequent customers were real estate agents. I did appreciate the business. I have done deals with several of them who remember me from those days.

Norma, I'm like you. Love to have a clean car. I am generally a good tipper. I always think for the job they are doing that I would hate to be doing myself it's a little thing.

Good job Norma. Minimum wage earners deserve extra tips when they are so good at what they do.

Deborah - I'm thankful to have someone wash my car for me--it's a wise time management move for me--I'm pretty sure it would take me two hours to clean the interior and wash and dry the exterior.
