There's a new deli in Dallas - Gio’s Café & New York Deli. I didn't know about it until last night, but now word of mouth is spreading fast. Wish I had known last week because it would have saved me a drive up to Campbell and Preston when I had a craving for a hot pastrami on rye that I thought only the Deli-News could cure.
Gio's is a New York-style delicatessen and restaurant, now open at Preston Valley Shopping Center, located at the southwest corner of Preston Road and LBJ Freeway (which is, happily, within walking distance of the Keller Williams Dallas Premier office). There have been other delicatessens in this same location, most recently Roasters & Toasters and Ed's.
The restaurant is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner with specialties such as stuffed cabbage, goulash, Romanian steak, corned beef and cabbage, smoked fish platters and gourmet Angus burgers. Many items are flown in from the Carneige Deli in New York. There are meats (including by the pound), smoked fish, cheeses, sour pickles, pastries, knishes and breads among other mouth-watering fare.
The restaurant is owned and operated by Spiro & Lisa Giannopoulos. Spiro started in the restaurant business in 1978 as co-owner of Cuzin’s Restaurant in Brooklyn, New York. He moved to Dallas in 1989 and has since been involved with the Deli-News, Royal Café, Café Meditterane and Paesanos. I asked him where the name of the restaurant came from, since neither he nor his wife are Gio. He told me that Lisa worked at Lawry's and had to wear a name tag. No one could pronounce her last name there, so they called her Mrs. Gio. When Spiro contemplated a name for the deli, he suggested that Lisa name it after herself, so she chose Gio's.
Gio’s Café & New York Deli is open Tuesday through Saturday, 7:00 am - 9:00 pm and Sunday & Monday, 7:00 am -3:00 pm.

I had a hot pastrami on rye with a schmear of mustard, a side of potato salad, and a sour pickle for lunch today. I'll be back to Gio's soon to sample more from their menu.
