Painting Kitchen cabinets VS Refacing: Which would you choose?

By
Home Stager with Abella Home Staging & Redesign

Painting kitchen cabinets vs refacing, which would you choose? As Home Stager we all know that kitchen sells home. But when the kitchen is outdated, what options would you choose, painting or refacing? Both options are good or is one better then the other? Let's compare.

Refacing your kitchen cabinets:

  • Work with existing layout.
  • Can add cabinet space if you desire to expand.
  • Choice of laminate or wood doors.
  • Can be done in as little as 3-5 days
  • Choice of color finishes.
Painting you kitchen cabinets:
  • Work with existing layout
  • Unlimited choice of color
  • Can be done in about a week.
  • Much more work on the homeowners part.

As you can see they both have good qualities, however with painting, i worry about the paint oxidizing with the heat. And how do you clean it? If I were to paint my cabinets (and I'm seriously thinking about it) I would use car paint.

In research refacing i don't like the look of those laminate cabinets they look fake to me. And to replace it with wood is much more expensive.

In the end I think you have to consider cost, time and the over look you are trying to achieve. One other thing to consider is durability, especially if your not planning on selling your home. Painting your kitchen cabinets vs refacing is a tough choice and one I think you should research throughly to decide which option is best suited for your needs!

When I first bought my house and didn't have any money I chose to paint. it only cost a couple hundred dollars and it transformed my dark kitchen dramatically.  I loved it and was very happy for about 7 years. Now I'm ready to do a full kitchen remodel and will tear out everything. I think that paint or stain can make a big difference for a little money and would highly recommend painting.

Painting is usually my choice because of the cost involved.  Yes it is more work but it can be very durable if the right paint is used and even a coat of non-yellowing poly as a top coat.  I love the transformations that paint can create.

Thanks Kathy, did you have any problems with it as far as cleaning and scratches?

Ginger, thanks for the info. I will definitely use a non-yellowing top coat!

Hi Carmela--A few weeks ago I posted this blog on a kitchen where we opted to paint the cabinets because there was virtually no budget to consider doing anything else (http://activerain.com/blogs/jljones13).   We used Dutch Boy's Cabinet and Trim paint (http://dutchboy.com/products/interior/trim/cabinet-and-trim/index.jsp), which does not need a poly top coat.  It goes on beautifully and what you see in my pictures is one coat of primer and two coats of cabinet paint.  The homeowner (who decided to hold off on putting the house on the market until Spring) reports that the finish is great and simple to clean.  As far as paint versus refinishing I really do think it depends on the style one is looking for and the budget one has.  I love the painted looked on good cabinets and it extends their lives for many years.

Thanks Janet. It seems most people prefer to paint and I agree as well, especially if your cabinets are well made.

I used to use ONLY oil-based Benjamin Moore Satin Impervo for this type of project. It goes on as creamy as a baby's butt...flawless under a careful painter's hand. Durable as heck. But, all oil-based paints yellow as the years pass by. Whatever color you carefully choose today isn't what you'll have in only a couple of year's time.

Now, I use Benjamin Moore's latex-based Aura in a Satin Finish to get a very similar result with no fumes and no turpentine. It is scrubbable! If you need to touch it up, it offers seamless touch up. And the color doesn't yellow.

I've sent many things to the auto paint shop because I wanted a baked-on finish. Stoves.  Fancy vintage screen doors. Rusty outdoor furniture. Never sent cabinets, though. I dont think they can handle 130 degree temps.

Thanks Michelle, I'm going to see about the auto paint. i have a friend in the auto body shop. I know BM Aura is great paint and it's nice to know that it is scrubbable. I want to paint my kitchen but i don't want it to yellow or peel or worst start to wear out when i scrub it!

Hi Carmela ~ I'll be staging this house on Wednesday .... did a consult there for the sellers about 3 months ago and advised them to have the dated oak cabinets painted rather than replace or reface them.  Don't they look great?

Wow, beautiful transformations. Paint works for me especially when trying to reduce costs for my clients.

Great post and photo responses thus far!

It's not a game, it's your life.

I agree with most of these comments.  If cost is a factor, painting is the chosen option.  In Las Sendas Mesa AZ homes for sale it is often that you will see a gel-stain really bring out the refreshing that is needed.

Maureen, Great job, love the way it looks.

Liz, Mark, By far paint seems to be the choice to go with!

Hi Carmela, paint every time! It is fast and inexpensive and with the new aura paint by ben moore it is a breeze to do. I have used the gel stain as well. Both excellent options. No regrets.

I spoke with the Benjamin Moore manager in my area this week, and they have a primer that actually works on laminate cabinets as well.  Right across the street from the store is a HUGE cabinetry hardware store, and that "jewelry" on fresh painted cabinets could really add value to a home.
