A "Blizzard Watch" is now in affect for the Chicagoland area with an accumulation of snow expected anywhere from 12 to 20 inches! The storm which is expected to start up on Tuesday evening will have the heaviest snowfall occurring during overnight Tuesday through 9:00 AM Wednesday morning.

Are you and your loved ones prepared?  You never know what to expect when snow paralyzes a city, town or village so it's best to take precautions before the initial storm begins.

Here is a list of things that you might want to check off in order to be safe and well prepared:

1.  Anyone who is taking prescription drugs should make sure that your scripts are not low and that you at least have enough medication to last for up to a week or at least until the storm has subsided and the roads and sidewalks are safe to navigate.

2.  Make sure that your furnace is working properly.

3.  Keep a supply of candles handy in the event that you loose power and you do not have a generator for back-up.   If you have a generator make sure you test it to see whether it is working properly.

4.  Have an ample supply of food in the house.

5.  Have emergency phone numbers handy.

6.  Make sure you have an emergency kit that includes, a first-aid kit, matches, portable radio with extra batteries, bottled water and a flashlight.

7.  Don't try to shovel heavy snow, especially if you have a medical condition that could compromise your well-being.

8.  Call any older relatives to make sure that they are also prepared and then call again to make sure they are faring the storm well.

9.  Don't drive once conditions become slippery and dangerous.  Keep tuned into the latest local weather and traffic updates and LISTEN to their advice!

10. Be mindful of your pets if you need to take them outdoors.  Salt can become lodged in their paws and cause pain and sometimes infections.

And lastly plan to enjoy your time at home when harsh weather conditions hit.  Use this as an opportunity to spend time loved ones.  You can even catch up on emails, houseclean, do laundry, pick up your hobby or listen to music.
