SANTA BARBARA CITY COUNCIL TO CONSIDER SINGLE USE PLASTIC BAG REDUCTION TUESDAY

We need your support for action to reduce the use of disposable shopping bags in the City of Santa Barbara. Please attend and testify before City Council on Tuesday, February 1st (estimated time 2pm) or write to your city council members now!

At its February 1st meeting, the Santa Barbara City Council will consider a recommendation from its Sustainability Committee to refer consideration of a Single-Use Bag Reduction Ordinance to the Ordinance Committee for further development. The proposed ordinance likely to be put forward would simply make elements of the currently voluntary "Where's Your Bag?" education campaign mandatory for local grocery stores, including mandatory signage and staff training as well as certain reporting requirements to evaluate effectiveness. While this is a step in the right direction, Channelkeeper continues to advocate for an ordinance with more teeth that will make a real impact on reducing disposable bag use in Santa Barbara.

Our partner, SB Channelkeeper has been working hard to move the City of Santa Barbara toward some type of meaningful regulatory measure to reduce the use of disposable bags in our community. Please attend and testify at the February 1st city council meeting. Estimated time 2pm in the afternoon (not a set time, check streaming video). The bag ordinance will be the sixth item on the agenda. Please visit http://www.santabarbaraca.gov/CAP/ to view the agenda and staff report.

Some points to emphasize include:
· Cities and counties throughout California are passing plastic bag bans, including LA County, Santa Monica, Long Beach, San Jose
· Santa Barbara is a laggard on this issue
· The environmental impacts of single use bags are significant
· California municipalities spend nearly $25 million each year to collect and dispose of plastic bag waste

If you are unable to attend the city council meeting, please contact your City Council members by email or phone to let them know that you support a meaningful reduction in the use of disposable shopping bags in our community.
