can freezing weather affect my internetBeware the Internet Storm! - Relax - The Weather Will Not Affect Your Internet

Wonder why you can't get on ActiveRain or many other sites out there? I have seen so many random comments, oh it must be the cold weather... yada yada... guess what? NOPE!

If it's cold outside... everyone's inside.. and what are they doing? Well either making babies or surfing the net. My guess is probably the latter. All those fingers a-clickin will do some damage to sites that can't take that much traffic all at once...including ActiveRain.

Other than something physical happening such as a bulldozer cutting the line or a tree falling on a wire, actual cold should not affect your internet.

But here is a bit of info you might not know... Server Administrators WANT their servers to be as cold as possible. Dry, cold air air maDoes the weather affect my internetkes the systems work much better. Overheating is bad and causes harddrives to break, CPU's to crash and power supplies to disable.

Large computer companies typically house thier computers and servers underground for this reason. Even a small operation like us, places a broken hard drive in the freezer overnight to try and get them working again to pull of the data. It has worked on more than one occasion.

Your,  internet is either cable, line or satelite based and if you have a phone connection you probably have an internet connectin. Folks in Alaska and Arctic have no problems with this.

So put your fears to rest. If you are having problems with the internet it probably is not the cold weather. Yes, there is a rare chance something could affect a line somewhere but it is very rare and hardly the case.. More than likely all those folks are just on the same site as you at the same time.

Have a good night!! BLOG ON IF YOU CAN! :)

Tammy- I remember (20+ years ago) when my boss got our first large computer system.  He knew I loved tech stuff and he couldn't wait to call me and tell me about the special room he had designed to house it and how he needed to keep the temp low.  So what happens to us down here during a hurricane??

Tammy - I know our fellow AR members have been burning up the posting .. cabin fever and the cure .. turn to the blog.  I had suspected AR being so burdened by all the activity.  We ought to have some really good posts to read!

Tammy,

I had not thought of everyone trying to access AR due to the weather.  I just assumed that AR was doing some more server work.

Tammy, I read a blog last night that accused the cold weather of interfering with the speed of her internet. I knew it couldn't be. Thanks for the clarification

I didn't think of weather as an explanation for the slow speed of the internet the last few days.  Good to know it's not actually the weather but all those bloggers generation more content.

Hi Tammy,

The busyness is intuitive.

The cold and servers was information I had never put together.

I have visited server farms - and they are airconditioned to a colder temperature than what is comfortable!

Thanks

Tammy, I can remember visiting computer rooms with my Dad forty years ago - and they were kept really cold. Our Oklahoma weather (now almost 20 inches of snow) has been bearable because we DO have internet and power! Stay warm!

Tammy... I am so glad you said this.  Our computers do like it cold (maybe that's why my hubby doesn't want to turn our heat on) lol
