Does Article Submission Work for SEO?

Over the years I have tried submitting articles through various portals in hopes that it would help my SEO.  From what I have seen it has not helped it that much, but it has helped my branding.

I feel like the good articles I publish get picked up by numerous great sources such as google news, but I think google then turns around and counts most of it as duplicate content since you have the same article on a few dozen sites.  Have you seen anything similar to this?

Just recently I published an article on WiredPrNews and got great results for a fair price.  I ended up with the article getting published on numerous sites such as EINNews, which seems to be a pretty powerful site, but my article was not published on a "featured page".  It was also on Google News, but they update their news so frequently it has already fallen off the grid.

I would like to get your feedback on article submission and am curious if any of you have had any great success such as getting your article featured on CNN, NewYorkTimes, USAToday, or any other major news sites.

I have tried various methods of Artical submission with limited success. We are all looking for that magic spot to raise SEO values but whenever we are close Google changes the rules. lol

I think article submission can be a great tool for branding if you can get your article in the right spot.
