A new Online News Resource is available for Reston, VA, The Reston Patch.
The Patch is designed to get news to the community at the Hyperlocal level (much like we try to do here on ActiveRain). I just did a quick search to find out where there are 'Patches' available in Virginia and this is the list that came up:
-
- Annandale
- Ashburn
- Ballston-Virginia Square
- Burke
- Centreville
- Chantilly
- Clarendon-Courthouse-Rosslyn
- Dale City
- Del Ray
- Fairfax City
- Fairfax Station
- Falls Church
- Fort Hunt
- Fredericksburg
- Herndon
- Huntington-Belle Haven
- Hybla Valley
- Kingstowne
- Lake Ridge-Occoquan
- Leesburg
- Lorton
- Manassas Park
- Manassas
- McLean
- Mount Vernon
- Oakton
- Old Town Alexandria
- Reston
- Rose Hill
- Vienna
- Woodbridge
By going to Patch, you can find out if there is coverage for your community and, if not, request it.
In The Reston Patch I found an article about a young woman I know and her efforts to raise money for Camp Sunshine: Kelsey Good, the Whiz Kid of the week (Go Kelsey!).
I just pulled up The Herndon Patch for Herndon, Virginia, and found coverage of an event that I had written about last week: Support Herndon High Girls' Lacrosse and Sleep Well At Night!
It will be interesting to see how this new effort takes off. The creation of these local hyper-local news portals is part of an effort by AOL to reinvent itself, AOL Bets on Hyperlocal News, Finding Progress Where Many Have Failed
Meanwhile, I have contacted the local site editor to let her know that I am available if she ever needs comments or feedback on a story. She, in response, let me know how and when to notify her about scheduled open houses. Free advertising is always the best advertising!
Personally, I live the Reston motto, 'Live, Work, Play.' If The Reston Patch can provide me with the information that I seek about people, news and events in my community, I will be their biggest fan!
