Cook County Taxes - Wondering why your taxes are so high?
The Better Government Association paired with CBS Channel 2 did a recent investigation on the Treasurer's Office of Maria Pappas. What they found was outrageous and shocking! Mismanagement, fraud and disrespect for the taxpayers money were found through out the system under her daily control. The Treasurer's Office is the Cook County body that actually collects your taxes. The Assessor's Office is the body that actually levies your taxes and decides what taxes will be based on funds needed.
What they found under the direction of Maria Pappas is outrageous at best! You just can't make this kind of stuff up!
$94,000 for a personal driver but given another name/function/title
$57,000 for a lady to clean the Treasure's Office but given another name/function/title
$23,000 desk set that Maria Pappas had bought for her office and remodeled by a designer. Channel 2's Pam Zeckman did try to enter Pappas's Office to get a look at this whopper of a desk but was denied entry.
During the course of the joint investigation, Maria Pappas denies any wrong doing or exorbitant spending
of tax payer funds for her office or 'needed' services. I'm not sure 'The Donald' even has a $23,000 desk in Trump Tower!
I'd like to volunteer to be the cleaning lady for $57,000 per year! When do I start and will the driver come and pick me up?
I'd like to volunteer to show Maria Pappas her new 'office' at Joliet Correctional Center. See if she can squeeze that office set into her new holding cell.
Maria Pappas needs to step down, resign and begin another segment of her scheming life in the private sector. During the Channel 2 interview of the charges/costs Maria Pappas repeatedly told the Cook County Taxpayers that 'No one is going to tell me how to run my office'.
The gall of Chicago politicians and elected officials with the spending of our money!
But, let's bring this a little closer to home and get a little more personal. I had to sit with a widowed tax payer that is crying because she doesn't know how she is going to pay her recent tax increase. At 75 years old, what are her options here? These are real tears from people that financially don't know where to turn.
And Maria Pappas thinks she's entitled to a $23,000 desk?
Something is wrong in Cook County.
