Is My Son the Next Henny Youngman?

For those of you who don't know who Henny Youngman is, shame on you!  No, seriously, Henny Youngman was known as "King of the One Liners".  He actually passed away the same year that my son was born (1998).  His most famous line was "Take my wife.....please!"

My son also seems to have a penchant for one-line comments that make me laugh.  This past week, he shared some gems with us that I wanted to share with you guys:

We were in San Antonio last weekend for my wife's 20th high school reunion (mine is next year in Dallas).  While we were walking along the beautiful Riverwalk, with its shops and restaurants, someone right in front of us was blowing smoke directly into our faces.  My eight-year old son said dryly, "Whoever invented cigarettes should be dragged into the street and shot."  I couldn't help but laugh, but then I also wondered where he could have possibly heard this phrase before.  He told me that he saw it in one of his Garfield books.

Later that weekend, we were in the van and my wife and I kissed.  The kids were behind us in their seats, and the kiss was longer than a peck, but shorter than something you wouldn't do in front of the kids, if that makes any sense (makes more sense when you say it out loud than if you write it).  Anyway, after we finished kissing, my son said, "Great!  Now I have to wash my eyeballs!" while rubbing his eyes, as if that could somehow erase the image of his parents smooching.

Last night, after we finished his bedtime prayers, he held out his arms in a preformed circle and said, "Give me a hug, big guy!!"  Of course, I was happy to oblige, so I bent down to hug him.  He didn't really latch on for the hug, but it was a hug nonetheless.  Then, he said, "I was actually talking to God.  But now you got your Bran hug for the day anyway."  (We call them Bran hugs because his name is Brandon.)

If you liked this post, I have shared here a number of times about funny things that he has said, along with funny stuff from my other kids as well (see below).  Enjoy!

So what you're saying is that they get even funnier as they age?  Should be entertaining!  I love coming here for information to help grow my business, but it's nice to read about the stuff that really matters.  I think your personal blogs are what help separate you from the pack by letting readers get to know the guy behind the professional.  Kudos, Jason.

PAUL - Yes, they do seem to get funnier as they get older, at least in my house.  We were playing "Sorry" earlier this evening, and I realized that my older kids really do have a good sense of what is funny now.  They should - look at who is teaching them!  Thanks for your comments, as always!  It means a lot to me.

Jason, what a lovely post. Write this down, oh wait you just did. It is funny how as time flies by you forget those precious moments of things your kids do and say. We have tapes of all of our kids talking when they were little so we could remember their sweet little voices.

Jason,
He sounds like an adorable little guy...thank you for the morning smiles (and giggles).
I have 3 sons and so often I think of the days when they were little. My middle son was a talkaholic and nothing was sacred..if he heard or saw it, it would crop up again down the road at an unexpected time in an awkward environment. My family still talks about the things he said (and he's now 21).

Such a delightful post...I look forward to reading many more from you like this.

Very funny stuff, Jason.  I look forward to reading the other posts that you mentioned,

Wash out his eyeballs...LMAO!  I remember when my son and daughter cracked our "secret code".  They were about 14-ish.

The hug is hilarious! I'm wondering if I call God "Big guy", whether He will give me a few more hugs?! I could sure use them :)

OK, I'm sharing one with you:

When my son was three, we took one of our last baths together when he pointed out that his belly (which stuck out a bit as children's do) was actually bigger than mine. So I told him how mine was once REALLY big when he was just a tiny little goldfish bubbling inside and how I used to sing to him so he would know me when he was born. He said, "Oh mama, if I have a bad day, can I please go back inside?" Such innocence :)

MISSY - Someone else told me to make sure to print out all of these types of posts so that my kids could keep them for later, and I intend to do that.  I don't have any tapes or video of myself as a kid, so I try to make some effort to record things like this.  We also have a lot of videotape of the kiddos, although I have been somewhat lax in that department of late.  Thanks for commenting!

NANCY - Please take a look at the other posts.  They are pretty similar quality.  If you liked this one, I think you will like them as well.  They are from the same comedian, after all!  Thanks for reading and for commenting!

JO-ANNE - That is very cool.  I would imagine that we will be discussing the funny things they say for many years to come.  I'm glad you liked this post - I seem to have endless material for these, and I am sure that I will be writing more of them in the future.  Thanks for the encouragement!

RENEE - I am glad you liked this one, and that it made you laugh.  I don't look forward to the day when our kids can crack our various "codes".  Thanks for reading and have a great day!

JENNIFER - He seems to be very close to God, and he is one of the better prayers that I have seen at this age.  At some point, I want to write about some other cool experiences that we have had in that arena.  Thanks for sharing your cute story!  Each of our kids has acted like they want to go back in at times, but I don't think any of them have ever actually said it!  Great story -

Good thing Henny's retired.  He might not be able to take the competition!  You've got some great kids, there, Jason.  Congratulations on so many levels!

Cheers, from DC!

JAYNEE - You always have some of the best comments out there.  I also feel like they are terrific kids, which is why I try to celebrate them by writing about them.  They are such an integral part of my life now, that it is hard to imagine not having kids.  As always, thanks for stopping by with your upbeat words!

Wonderful the liners kids pull on us. My son is 26 now but when he was young my mom pulled his wet pants from the washer when my son turned up frantic about he had something in the pocket. My mom pulled out a wet dollar bill and he said....oh, great ...liquid assets.  hahaha.

Thanks Jason....I chime in and give my opinion...although after awhile it gets to be too much drama....and need a little fun to cut down on the monotony.....did you answer on Bob Stewart's post this am?  He's an AR guy and asks us all to give input.

Now that is funny.  Great post. You probably should start a daily log of all his one liners so you can remind him on his wedding day in your toast..:-)

Thanks for sharing....

When my oldest was 4yrs old, we took him fishing in the boat. He had already caught several sandbass when he hooked a 5lb catfish. it broke off right at the boat.

I said: Dang, he broke your line.

He said: That's ok.... we have more line.

SALLY - Yes, I did give my opinion on that issue, although my comments were brief and to the point.  Thanks for the reminder!

MATTHEW B - Good plan.  I could probably write a short book on this by that time.  Thanks for your comments!

Hi Jason:  Hmmm... I can just hear Henny Youngman playing "Hearts and Flowers" in the background.  Funny how just the mention of something like that can bring the sight of him and his violin back into my mind clearer than if I were watching him on a DVD.  Funny how the brain works.  I am old.  Yikes.

09/25/2007 02:49 AM by Fort Worth Real Estate - - - Karen Anne Stone (RE/MAX Trinity)

KAREN ANNE - I heard once that you are getting old when pretty much anything that someone says reminds you of a story.  I feel that way all the time these days, but I am still relatively young.  Thanks for reading and for your great comment.

09/25/2007 04:29 PM by Jason Crouch, Broker - Austin Texas Real Estate (Austin Texas Homes, LLC)

I love kids! They are sometimes a great source for laughter in our lives and just seeing their minds at work can be a blessing in itself. Unless it is like what my daughter did to me and using those one liners against me!

10/01/2007 12:51 AM by Todd Clark (Realtor), GRI (Washington Co, Beaverton Oregon) (Kastings & Associates, Beaverton Oregon Real Estate)

Hi TODD - Thanks for stopping by to comment on this one.  I already have some fresh new material to share sometime soon.

Jason:  It's been ten days now since you shared some of your son's one-liners with us.  Let's have some more.  Quit fiddlin' around, as Henny Youngman would say.

10/01/2007 01:27 AM by Fort Worth Real Estate - - - Karen Anne Stone (RE/MAX Trinity)

KAREN ANNE - I guess it has been awhile.  I have a couple of new ones that I could share.  Maybe I will blog about this tomorrow.  Thanks for the encouragement!

10/01/2007 01:29 AM by Jason Crouch, Broker - Austin Texas Real Estate (Austin Texas Homes, LLC)

Ok Jason:  Here we go.  You call your son Bran.  Let's say he had a friend whose name was also "Bran."  If your son Bran, and his friend Bran, were both acting very very strangely, and doing weird things... would that make the two of them... "Bran flakes ?"  <ducking>

10/01/2007 01:31 AM by Fort Worth Real Estate - - - Karen Anne Stone (RE/MAX Trinity)

Wow!  That was truly bad!  It was so bad that I respect you for having the boldness to actually post it. :)  Just kidding with you.  Thanks for your odd comment, my friend.

10/01/2007 01:33 AM by Jason Crouch, Broker - Austin Texas Real Estate (Austin Texas Homes, LLC)

Jason:  That took absolutely no boldness whatsoever.  In fact, I thought of it right away when I read your post the first time... a week ago when I made my "Hearts and Flowers" comment.  I can actually see Henny playing the violin, and can actually hear his unmistakable voice chirping out his famous "one-liners."  The old... "I take my wife everywhere... but she keeps finding her way home again."

10/01/2007 01:37 AM by Fort Worth Real Estate - - - Karen Anne Stone (RE/MAX Trinity)

KAREN ANNE - I bet you are hilarious to hang out with.  I agree - it isn't so much boldness as second nature in your case.
