Numbers from the 2010 Census continue to be released and they are showing a population explosion in Livingston Parish. Livingston Parish grew by nearly 40% from 2000 - 2010, increasing the population from 91,814 to 128,026! The population growth was second only to an adjacent parish - Ascension. Livingston is now the 10th largest parish in Louisiana.
Livingston Parish is part of the 8 parish Baton Rouge metropolitan area (MSA). This is how the government groups the region together for purposes of counting among other things, population, housing and employment. With the release of the census numbers, the Baton Rouge MSA's population is in excess of 800,000 which is really good news for the area. I know there are plenty of legitimate gripes about the traffic congestion, infrastructure needs, etc, but this population number is very significant for our area.
This moves Baton Rouge up in the pecking order as we compete against other cities for economic growth. We are now considered a 'major market' which will put us on the radar screen of many, many companies who normally would not have previously considered us.
As you might expect, there is a building boom currently occurring in the parish from commercial and residential development to municipal development such as schools. The housing market in particular provides some challenges and opportunities.
Here is a post showing home sales trends in Livingston Parish as of December 2010. As you can see there is way too much inventory available that will just take some time - and growth - to work through.
