Most of us have.  I know we have and when we were getting ready to slap that "FOR SALE" sign in the window, guess what we did?  Well, we did our best to pretty it up.  We may have spent an entire weekend cleaning it out and washing it up.  Looked under the Seats, made sure the Trunk was cleaned out, cleaned out any Ashtrays that may have been used.  Probably even waxed it & windexed the Windows really well so it sparkled!

Car For Sale

So when a Seller is getting ready to sell a house, shouldn't they take the same sort of care as when you sell anything "Used" or as they refer to it nowadays - "Pre-Owned"?  Think about what we do when we have a Garage Sale.  Much the same sort of care goes into the preparation of selling used items.

Somewhere along the way, probably in the heat of the Frenzied Seller's market, people overlooked that a pre-owned home should be shined up before the marketing begins.  As silly as it may seem, Buyers like the homes they look at to be clean and fresh looking.  Alittle elbow grease and a fresh coat of paint can go a very long way in the race to be "SOLD".

I suppose the purpose of this message then would be to Sellers - "Take some care in the preparation of getting your home ready for selling".  When the day draws near for the first showing or Open House, be prepared when those doors open to be the best one that the market has to offer for the price.  When the agents make a list of homes to show their Buyers, you want your home to be at the very top of their showing list!

The competition is staggering in this current "Buyer's Market" so when making plans to Sell your home, remember that the competition doesn't have to be the newest one on the block to win the race.  Just the most prepared!

Did you ever sell a used car?  Just apply the same theory to selling a house and you're sure to be a success!

Great advice.  Do you provide your new sellers with a checklist of things to remember?  I think that helps - sometimes they don't see the forest for the trees, and a third party like yourself can point out things - it feels less personal if you provide them with a preprinted list - even if you printed it up the night before just for them:-)

This is the exact analogy I use when presenting Home Staging services to Real Estate Agents.  It is hard for homeowners to view their homes objectively.  It pays to hire a professional home stager.  I'm right next door in Sparkill NY - Feel free to contact me for home staging services for your clients.  I'd love to come talk to you and the agents at ReMax.  Feel free to send me an email or call me. Here is a link to my website:

Hey Maureen,

I would love to talk to you about staging.  Not so sure about bringing it up to my office though.  Unfortunately it's not the sort of office that does stuff like that.  All the agents just pay their ReMax desk fees and work independantly.  But I would love to talk to you about the staging concept.  I looked at your site and saw the type of things you bring in to stage.  That's exactly what I do with our listings.  In fact, I have alot of stuff in my own house that I schlep to my listings, as needed to stage them a bit.  I'm sure I don't do the professional job that you do but I'd love to send you some of my before and after pics and get your comments.  Thanks for commenting on my blog!

Lisa,

This is a great article and thanks for submitting it to the Carnival of Active Rain!

It was a very tough category to judge and I had to read all the posts several times before I was able to pick a winner.

Keep up the great work!

Hi Lisa,

I also use this analogy when talking to Homeowners and Reators about Staging. I have done quite a few homes in Bergen County.

I have done work for:

Al Donohue of Marron & Gildea Realtors  201-906-3287

Maria Rini of Re/Max Real Estate Limited  201-615-4783

Laurell Albanese Of Gateway Realtor  201-615-4856

I have staged homes that the following Agents have listed:

Kristin Gildea of Marron & Gildea  201-819-4575

Susan Laskin Coldwell Banker  201-615-5353

I have also done staging for:

Builder, Will Seitter, Owner of Artisan Builder, Inc  in Ridgewood, NJ

I am a local New Jersey stager not from out of state. Visit our website to see more of our work.

Hi Barbara,

Thanks for the comment.  We know many of the agents you listed of course.  We'll keep you in mind should we require the services of a home stager!

Great minds think alike --- I had just blogged recently about the benefits of mimicking the car industry and suggesting/packaging the home to SELL fast similar to Certified Pre-Owned Cars. Check it out and thanks for the additional tips. ;)
