Most of my Active Rain friends know that before I entered the real estate business in 2005 my career was in publishing. I was involved in both magazine and book publishing for about thirty years here in Seattle as well as in California and Hawaii. I sold my last book publishing company, Emerald Point Press, in 2005.
When you have worked in one particular field that long it's hard to really remove yourself from it. I no longer publish and have no desire to do so, but still the business stays near. As an example, I received two calls this weekend asking my advice on book publishing. The first caller was asking for advice on promoting a book that she had recently published and the second was from a friend that is working on a book project, and would I proof and edit the manuscript for him.
Both calls received my full attention and I was happy to spend the time sharing my experience and advice, and because it was a friend I will review the manuscript at no charge.
I'm sure my experience is no different than other professionals who leave a field of endeavor after years of practice. We are considered experts and should be happy to share our knowledge with others. Even in the real estate business, those with years of experience should also be willing to share and mentor those individuals entering the field. You may be called upon one day to assist in someones development and success, do you think you'll be up to the task?
