Maine Moving Forward In Spite of BRAC Related Closures
With the Military's Base Realignment and Closure Initiative some states were fortunate to be faced with an influx of companies, jobs, people, and economic activity, while other states were faced with just the opposite as the bases closed.
For instance, the State of Maryland had to prepare for over 10,000 people at each of two military bases so they were one of the fortunate states.
However, the State of Maine which was facing the closure of a base and the loss of the related jobs and economic activity chose not to stand still and fall into a prolonged recession.
Runways and hangars at Brunswick Naval Air Station are being turned over to a civilian redevelopment authority months before the base closes to speed business development and job creation.
An aircraft manufacturer, information technology company and community college already announced plans to locate at the base, and a prominent economist has predicted the base will employ 2,000 to 3,000 people - and perhaps twice that - within two decades.
Good for you, Maine.
