Baby, it's cold outside....
"Feel good about your home" Is your furnace maintained? Last Friday was Furnace Filter Friday... It is furnace Friday on this site because every Friday is Furnace Friday here... It's February and I'd be Re-Blogging home inspector, Jay Markanich in VA if Re-Blog was working. Re-Blog is broke.
A 'Tale of Two Furnaces - Great Expections' for Furnace Friday? Jay Markanich's adventures in Home Inspection in Virginia is one of my favorite places for Furnace Friday Fodder... This week Jay's breaking the news to a buyer of a NEW $1.5 Million home that the builders "upgraded furnace" is not what the buyer expected. Jay went literary for 'A Tale of Two Furnaces - Great Expectations' Jay explains furnaces and the EnergyGuide chart and his clients expectations of what an upgraded furnace meant to them and their builder.
The image above is an old Real Living ecard with a February home maintenance "to-do" list. Here's the default message:
February Home Maintenance - "Baby, it's cold outside
"Baby, it's cold outside. So stay indoors this February - and complete a thorough check of these often-overlooked items:
-Check the snow load on your roof. If it seems excessive, call a roofing contractor to remove the snow, which could otherwise cause the roof to leak or collapse.
-Clean faucet aerators and showerheads.
-Remove and replace any worn or crumbling caulk or grout in and around bathtubs, sinks and toilets.
-Vacuum bathroom vent fan covers.
-Make sure the light bulbs in all home fixtures are of the correct wattage.
-Replace all extension cords, lamp cords and plugs that are brittle, worn or damaged."
hmmm how do you check the snow load on your roof from inside? Thank Goodness we seldom get much snow in Columbus. We get the cold. I believe today is one more day of cold and then gradually warming up. 50° plus weather on Thursday... That will feel good. That will melt the ice and snow. Wouldn't it be nice to have an early spring this year?
Buckeye Chuck Ohio's official groundhog predicted an early spring in 2011.
Brrrr Baby, it's cold outside...
Other than checking the snow on the roof most of the rest of the February maintenance list is inside the house... stay warm while you caulk, clean, vacuum. After you finish caulking, cleaning, vacuuming ... wouldn't you like to just curl up and read a book in your nice warm, cozy, heated home thanks to an efficient, well maintained (change the filters regularly) furnace...
hmmm a good book to read, Charles Dickens is appealing to me for some reason.
