My Renewed Massachusetts Real Estate License has Just Arrived!
Birthdays have a great significance with relation to Massachusetts Real Estate Licenses. Every other year our real estate license expires on that exact day.
In order to maintain a real estate license in Massachusetts agents must adhere to specific guidelines:
- Real estate agents are required to complete 12 hours of continuing education courses in their field. Courses must be from approved authorized real estate schools and can now be taken on-line.
- The renewal fee for a real estate broker is $142 and $103 for a salesperson.
What is the difference between a "broker" and a "salesperson?"
Real Estate Salesperson
Most real estate agents have a "salesperson" license. The requirements to become a real estate salesperson are to be at least 18 years age, have completed 24 hours of approved classroom and successfully pass the real estate test. Agents with only a salesperson license cannot be in business independently. They must work for a broker.
Real Estate Broker
In order to qualify as a broker, one must also be at least 18 years of age, have a principal residence in Massachusetts and must have been affiliated with a Massachusetts real estate broker as a salesperson for at least one year. That agent must then take 30 classroom hours of approved training and pass the broker exam. A broker must also apply for and obtain a surety bond in the amount of at least $5,000.
A person with a broker license can own her own real estate firm and employ others.
My license is that of a broker. And, with all of the snow recently, I had not made a trip to the mailbox in a few days. So, I breathed a sigh of relief when yesterday my renewed licensed finally arrived - since yesterday was actually my birthday.
