lily n irisI, like many grandparents across the country don't live next door to my grandchildren.  When they come to visit during holidays, sometimes they leave their finger prints on the door wall facing the lake. I can honestly say there's been times I wouldn't wash that door wall for months, just being able to see their little hands would make me smile.

This crazy economy has financially affected almost every American, in some way.  I've decided not to let this economic crisis interior with my job as Nana.  The days of buying expensive gifts and fancy trips are gone but I still can send "Nana surprises" in the mail.

Monday I stopped into our local thrift shop and found three childrens books I knew Lily (7) and Iris (6) would enjoy. Surprisingly, that particular day was 1/2 off the whole store, lucky me.  Then I was off to Dollar Tree, well, everyone knows everything there is only a $1.00.  I decided to purchase some Valentine trinkets the girls would enjoy. Finally, I stopped into the Post Office to pick up a shoebox size Priority Mailer.  Shopping complete I head home.

Amazingly, I only spent $16.94, and that included the Priority Mailer.  Here's how it broke out.

  • Dollar Tree: 2 boxes conversational candies, 2 packs of Valentine napkins, 1 cup set (2 cups)
  •                 1 pack of Valentine pencils, 1 pack of stickers  Total: $10.60 (tax included)
  • Thrift Store: 3 books, @ .25 = .75 But remember, it was 1/2 day so it was only $.38.
  • Priority Mail: $5.96...hint, if you print your labels at home verses taking it to the PO, you save online

I put the package in the mail yesterday. And Now Comes the Amazing Part.... My granddaughters received their special package today and couldn't wait to call me and thank me for thinking of them.  They were absolutely thrilled.  And to think, it only cost $16.94.

The moral of this story: For less than a dinner out, I was able to bring my granddaughters joy and they know Nana was thinking of them, even though miles separate us.

PS...their little hand prints are still on the door wall from Christmas.

You have grandchildren??? Stop it, no you don't! If you do, you are truly blessed, and they are blessed for having a grandmother like you. They'll appreciate the little things you do even more so than the big things.
