17 Comments on Beckett Bridge in Tarpon Springs-Florida is a Unique Drawbridge
Interesting post and history. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you, Roy.
Toni,
I have always been fascinated by drawbridges. They are an homage to the ingenuity of engineers who created them as the best solution for the time. When we lived in Napa, we had a drawbridge, that was subsequently replaced with a regular bridge. I felt that the character of that particular section of town was gone. A
I agree, Alexandra, several drawbridges have been replaced in Pinellas County and I think the same thing.
Thats a great picture! Reminds me of the CA delta out here. Lots of bridges, and sometimes the operators fall asleep...
Hi Toni:
Interesting information on this bridge.
I wonder how often the bridge needs to be opened.
Well, I would think several times a day; that's why I was surprised to learn that.
Chris - maybe that's why they don't have one anymore :)
Very interesting! Thank you for sharing :)
Great photo of the draw bridge, how interesting that arrangements need to be made in advance.
Hi Toni, you are really a wealth of information. Thank you for always sharing.
Toni...I've always found those really interesting. Nice post...Have a great day!---Rob
Carol - thanks for stopping in.
Steve - I thought so too.
Arleen - thank you - I can only try. :)
Rob - yes, they are interesting. We have quite a few in the area.
A lot of character in those old draw bridges. We are losing two this summer in Ocean City,NJ !!!!!
Oh, I'm sorry to hear that, Michael. I love seeing them.
Toni, Great to see that some of these type of bridges are still in operation. They are reminders of a slower pace of life.
When I lived in Seattle near Lake Union and it's draw bridge to the Puget Sound in the "90's, I always enjoyed hearing the boats call out to the toll bridge operator with their horns. Not like this bridge's situation where a reservation has to be made.
Thanks for your post to the "Of Historical Interest" Group! FEATURED!

PS love your cat on the sidebar!
We have quite a few of the double draw bridges still in Pinellas County, Gloria. But this being a single is unique. Thank you for the feature.
The kitty says thank you too.
