Maybe We're Getting TOO Easy To Find?
Once upon a time it was fairly difficult to find out much information about a person. You wanted to find their phone number, you grabbed the phone book and if they weren't unlisted there it was along with their home address. You MIGHT even find their spouse's name there too, but that was pretty much the end of the EASY information.
You wanted to know how much they paid for their home, you'd have to either ask them or go to the courthouse. How much they made? NUNYA BIZNESS!! How old they were? Pictures? How many kids they had? All things you'd have to know them to know. And perhaps considering the widespread use of social media, old expectations of privacy are outdated? The virtual snoopers and gossipers can just find out whatever they want with a few correct clicks of the mouse.
And don't get us wrong, as REALTORS® we WANT you to find us, but we want you to find our BUSINESS presence to help you decide if we're the right Warren County REALTORS® to help you buy or sell your home! Find our website, our blog, the places we advertise our listings!
But there's a website we recently came across that may concern you depending on how much you value your privacy. It's called www.spokeo.com and is basically a collector of all those little bits and pieces of public (and not so public) information that's out there on the web.
The interface is simple, type in someone's name, username, etc. and EVERYONE in that database that matches in the whole U.S. comes up, and then you scroll through by state and select the likely candidate. Click and up pops a virtual Rolodex card with their name, address, phone number, home's value, how many kids, spouse's name, etc. And for a few dollars a month a person can suddenly find out WAY more about you that Spokeo doesn't initially disclose, information that we personally feel ISN'T truly anyone else's business.
The good news if you value your privacy? Spokeo.com has an opt out option and here's how to do it:
First find your profile and copy the link at the top. Next enter www.spokeo.com/privacy and paste than link into the appropriate spot, follow the remaining instructions, confirm the email when you get it, and POOF...now you're back to some level of invisibility.
You decide, you can stay visible if you like, or go silent. We've personally chosen to delete both our names from Spokeo's database. You make the call for yourselves.
We hope you find this information helpful!

Dorie, It's just a little piece at a time. We fill out something on one site, then another....then someone like this comes along and compiles and they've got a business model. Perfect for the nosy nellies of the world!
Kind of scary, isn't it? I have a common name, there are at least three Cynthia Larsen's in my county alone and we were all real estate agents at one time. I can only imagine what information there is out there about "me".
We did the opt out at Spokeo a while ago though the real sad thing is that while your information is no longer on Spokeo, it is still on the companies that Spokeo bought the information from in the first place and somebody else can have access to all of that as well. Unfortunately the idea of privacy is just a pipedream for most unless you find some uninhabited land, build a shack and eat the twiggs and berries you can find each day.
Cynthia, Just one more reason to keep up with this and your annual credit report. Too easy for one of those bureaus to err.
Chris, True. The source of the information is still out there even though we opted out, but if someone wants all that info, I want them to WORK for it :)
Thanks for the heads up! I'm headed over there now to see what I find.
This site is pretty scary, anyone can find out about you!
Bliz ~ I had no idea about that site. That is a little scary to me. I am going to have to check it out.
Thanks for helping us out with this one. I had never even heard of it!
Tammy, Maybe more than you expect to :)
Joan, Certainly more available for a fee than most people would care to have revealed.
Dawn, It's easy and quick to remove your entry.
Kathryn, I'd heard of it a long time ago, forgotten about it, it came up again during a CE class this week.
Bliz.... great post; I had no idea this site existed. Going to go check it out.
whew, there wasn't much on me...said early 50's I am JUST 50 thank you very much! And it says my house is worth $168,000 (which if that is true, I am way upside down on it!)lol And it doesn't show my kids..
But I know from playing 2 truths and 1 lie game on AR, you can find out a lot about people with a few clicks...

Thanks for this -- it's scary to think about what's out there. Am going to pass this info on to family and friends.
Is this just about the most offensive thing ever!!! Of course, there are how many "Most Wanted's" who can't be found, but the rest of the world is an open book . . .
Thanks Liz and Bill, I hate my personal information to be public knowledge. I'm opting out.
Peggy, Worth knowing it's there if nothing else!
Cindy, I think it said ours was worth 800k, cashing out tomorrow and heading for some undisclosed island ASAP :)
Cinnamon, Not a bad thing to do!
Tish, Maybe bin Laden is on there somewhere!!
Kay, Understandable, no reason to have much of that truly public.
Hmmm - never heard of it, so I had better go make sure I'm not married to Trudy also. Thanks for the opt-out info!
Bill, thanks for the great info. Headed to spokeo and followed your directions to opt-out. Suggested 'cause think everyone whould know about this.
Lori, Trudy better not be two timing...there's laws against bigamy :)
Leah, It may still be out there, but I'd like people to have to work for it. Most won't!
I saw this site a few months ago and took my name and my wifes name out of it. For some reason, my wife's is back in there.
Eric, Maybe a fresh scrape of outside data put her back?
