Freedom of the Bathroom

Freedom of the BathroomIsaac Asimov wrote in his autobiography, In Memory Yet Green, about how wonderful freedom of the bathroom is.  He discovered this freedom when he and his future wife moved from a one bathroom apartment to a two bathroom apartment.  He realized that each of them now could have their own bathroom, and would never have to wait for the other.

Asimov explained his idea during an interview with Bill Moyers.

ASIMOV:  If two people live in an apartment, and there are two bathrooms, then both have freedom of the bathroom. You can go to the bathroom anytime you want to and stay as long as you want to for whatever you need. And everyone believes in the freedom of the bathroom; it should be right there in the Constitution.

When I was a kid I had one brother, two sisters and my parents; and we only had one bathroom during the six years we lived in Colorado.  We managed.

As I talk with more and more first time home buyers, I am hearing more and more of them want, need and expect at least two bathrooms in the first home they buy.  Consequently, I am seeing fewer and fewer people who are willing to settle for a home that only has one bathroom.

The idea of first time home buyers looking to buy a starter home seems to be a lost notion.

In the past, first time home buyers would look to purchase a less expensive, two bedroom, one bathroom home, with the expectation of living in it until they could afford to move up to a larger home with more bedrooms and bathrooms.  I am seeing a lot of first time home buyers who expect to buy a turnkey, 3 bedroom, 2 bathroom home, when their budgets much more comfortably can afford a 3 bedroom, 1 bathroom home.

There are lots of one bathroom homes for sale in Whittier, and many of them have the space to add a second bathroom.  Often, buyers may find that it is more cost effective to buy a one bathroom home, and add a second bathroom a few years later.Man's Bathroom

Are we seeing the end of homes with only one bathroom?
