October is National Energy Awareness month. And, one of the large box stores has come out swinging. According to the Reuterswebsite, one large box store will be selling its own brand of CFL bulbs at a lower price than the name brand bulbs.

While I'm trying to be Politically Correct on this issue, I think the cost savings would be better spent improving environmental conditions in the Countries manufacturing the bulbs.

Additional information on National Energy Awareness Month at the Federal Energy website. There are several additional You Have The Power campaign materials.

In the rush to have everyone switch over to the compact fluorescent bulbs, is anyone thinking ahead about the huge amount of mercury we'll soon have to deal with?  If you haven't already done so, check the warnings on a CFL package - the manufacturers go out of their way to warn of the mercury in the bulbs, and they state that they should be disposed of as "hazardous waste", and not just thrown out with regular household trash.  I'll bet 80 to 90 percent of all consumers will just throw their burnt out bulbs in the trash, and all that mercury will end up in landfills.  Most people simply won't go out of their way to dispose of them properly.

Who made the determination that this inevitable increase in mercury in the landfills tomorrow, was a good trade-off for a bit less electricity consumption today?  How sure are we that it's the right decision?

Mary,  I always try to include additional facts.  Next Month will be interesting.

Stephanie,  Thanks for not mentioning the name, it's not my intention to advertise.

I agree, educating consumers about mercury in CFL bulbs is essential. I'm sure "the powers that be" think We have 10 years.   LED bulb prices are dropping rapidly, they will be the new replacement standard and contain no mercury. They are now also available as direct replacement for florescent tubes, but at 149.00 a pop a bit pricey.
