Ah, SugarHouse Casino. Everyone knows the plan by now. Just dare to utter the name however, and you will certainly get the 'evil eye' from fellow proud Philadelphians. As Philadelphians we should be concerned about the well-being of our communities and families, property values, traffic, river rights, and the importance of preserving our rich history in Philadelphia. It just seems that now more than ever there is a disagreement on just how to uphold and improve our quality of life in this great city.

City officials hoping that 'A spoon full of SugarHouse will help the medicine go down' (Forgive me..I couldn't resist.) are sorely mistaken. Instead these plans are fueling the rage within city residents who fear that they will soon hear the slot machines ringing from their living-rooms. Two proposed casinos (another being Foxwoods) that are approved for license, are a mere 100 Feet away from nearby homes!

'On May 15th, the people of Philadelphia sent a clear message via Philly's Ballot Box -- currently planned and future casinos should be at least 1,500 feet away from homes, places of worship, school, playgrounds or parks.
Philadelphians believe in a minimum standard of where slot parlors should be placed in the City. The two proposed slot parlors in Philadelphia are as close as 100 feet to homes.' - CASSINO-FREE PHILADELPHIA. CASSINO-FREE PHILADELPHIA site.

The residents of our city are uniting. Also Leading the charge is the group MASH (Mothers Against SugarHouse). Additionally, mayoral nominee - Michael Nutter is vocal in not supporting the casinos. The consensus seems to be that the reliability of cassino profit data is controversial at best, and that it is not clear that the reported revenue totals from casinos are sustainable over time.
