A tale of two cheese steaks

Last weekend as I wrote my plans changed at short notice and I grabbed a cheese steak at Bravissimo in Berwyn, PA. This week I was meeting a friend and suggested we hit Phil's Pizza and Steaks so I could sample and compare their cheese steak as well.

Bravissimo, layer their cheese at the bottom, the steak and onions top it melting the cheese so it is all gooey and delicious. Meat was tasty but not greasy.

Phil's put the cheese on top, not cheese wiz, but actual cheese and then run under the grill to melt the cheese and lightly toast the roll. Also tasty, not greasy, but i think I prefer my cheese below and untoasted.

However, Phil's is another place worth stopping off for a quick bite, portions are good, and service is quick, dining room is well sized and the choice on the menu is large as well.

Some more places to check out for my cheese steak search along the Main Line. Where is your favourite and why?

Hello Nick & Trudy:

One thing I learned about cheese stakes is that they are better the closer you get to Philly.

When I saw a blog about cheese steaks, I had to check it out.  I got a chuckle about Brian's comment because I was thinking the same thing....if the blogger wasn't from the Philly area, they wouldn't know what they were talking about!

Cheese steaks can be a very personal thing, everybody likes their own favorite. In Philly, the steaks can be dripping and the bread needs to be soft to absorb the juices. Both of these cheese steaks were dry, maybe cooked too long, or chopped too much, but I always felt that the cheese should be below, not on top.
