Westerly RI Community Profile & History

Westerly, Rhode Island is located in the southwestern corner of the State and enjoys the rustic atmosphere of an old New England village. Nestled along the Atlantic Ocean, the town is composed of seven villages also know as fire districts: Westerly, Watch Hill, Dunn's Corners, Misquamicut, Bradford, Shelter Harbor and Weekapaug.

The community boasts an illustrious history spanning more than three centuries. The Indian name for the town was Misquamicut - a place for taking salmon. The first European settler, Reverend John Crandall, arrived in 1661, and the town was formally established by John Babcock in 1669. Historically, the community is perhaps best known for the granite that was once mined from its quarries, used for building purposes in neighboring towns and cities and for monuments in various parts of the country.

One of Rhode Island's premier vacation towns, Westerly offers a scenic coastline with seven miles of sandy beaches. Rowing, swimming, ocean sailing, fishing and hiking make this a favorite resort area and a mecca for tourism. Popular recreational and historic attractions include Wilcox Park, a public park and arboretum with a wide variety of plant species, several brilliantly designed gardens, walking paths and a number of monuments and memorial throughout; the Flying House Carousel, opened in 1876 and now the oldest continuously-operated carousel in the nation; Napatree Point, which juts into the ocean from the Watch Hill peninsula and contains the extensive ruins of Fort Mansfield; several golf courses; and the many public and private beaches along the town's scenic coastline. The town is also noted for its many annual festivities, which include the First Night celebration on New Year's Eve; the Summer Pops, hosted by the town's famed chorus; the Columbus Day Parade; and the Misquamicut Music Festival.
