The Ronald McDonald House that Wasn't

Never get a Second Chance to Make a First Impression

The Dangers of Painting Your House When Color Blind

What Happens When You Lose a Bet with Your Neighbor

Maybe Next Time He'll Think Before He Cheats

These were all contenders for this Blog Post Title...and all would surely fit the theme.

This will be a short blog post, as in this case, a picture is worth a thousand words.

Story Behind the Photos:

While stopping by to see a former client and leave a little "pop by" gift, my partner and I came upon this home. We couldn't get the words out fast enough...

OHHHH....EEEMMMMM.....GEEEEEEE!!! (That's OMG - or Oh My Gosh for those non-teenage girls).

We looked at each other and simultaneously grabbed our camera phones.

The Point:

Now, why such a strong reaction to this home in particular? It wasn't for sale, so it's not like we had just arrived at THE perfect home for our client. It's not like we realized we were in front of a home to a celebrity. No. This home had, how can I put this nicely....TERRIBLE PAINT COLOR CHOICES for the trim!!! Sorry, there's no other way around it.

Don't get me wrong...I'm all for personalizing your home. I don't mean to take away the right to make your home whatever colors you feel are necessary ... INSIDE OF YOUR HOME. Do you think the neighbors appreciate these color choices? What if they were trying to sell their home? Don't you think the neat appearance - or lack thereof - could impact their sale? You betcha.

As it turns out this home was not located in an HOA. Because if it was then I don't think this would be an issue. The HOA would have squashed this decorator decision before a brush stroke even touched the outside of this home.

What were YOUR reactions to these photos? How would YOU react if you were a neighbor? Do you live next to an "interesting" home that's the talk of the neighborhood? Share your stories!

There used to be a house in my neighborhood that was painted that same yellowish color. It was a long, narrow house. That shade yellow with black trim, on a corner lot, no less, made it it the SCHOOL BUS house. As in, turn at the school bus house, you can't miss it...I was always tempted to graffitti that house with the name of the local school bus, and a Thomas plaque at the front door, (but I didn't).

This is really a terrible seller mistake & will often cost Mr. Colorblind Seller 2 to 3 times the amount of the actual painting back to a respectable color.  If it's the wrong color when it's getting painted - stop!

I did a post once on Benjamin Moore's Butt Ugly Blue.

Looks like he picked up that bucket of paint from the Dept. of transportation and it was intendented to paint the yellow lines down the middle of the street.  I mean doesn't it look just like the road center lines?

Loved your titles.  all of them.

Wow, my neighbors just painted their home yellow. It got cold and didn't get finished.

Everyone hates it, but oh well, a little paint and it can be covered over.

We live in the mountains where a lot of our homes are log or log sided.  This past summer we listed a pretty non-descript house which didn't have much going for it other than it had a great creek and a pond.  While speaking on the phone with the seller one day, he told us he was going to paint the house and freshen it up.  Since it was already a rustic dark brown, we figured he would use the same color and just freshen it up.  When we went back to take new pictures lo and behold, it was a LOVELY (?) shade of baby blue.  Now mind you this house has a green metal roof!  When we asked the seller about it, he thought it was a lovely shade of grey.  He was so proud and we totally felt sad for him.  Had he only taken a moment and asked the salesperson for help, a lot of marketing time could have been avoided.

Funny!! I saw a home a few years ago that was otherwise a beautiful brick home, and they painted the trim and garage door pink and lavender. It was really gaudy..I also know of a 50s style trailer that was painted electric blue, trim and all. =) Only in Kentucky!

Holy Cow! Who would do that?! We had a home in our neighborhood once where the whole house was that bright yellow. We bought a home with a bright purple living room. I intended to repaint but never got around to it before we moved, but I got lots of compliments. It helped me break out of my neutral color rut.

Maybe they got a fantastic deal on the paint.  That can be the only explanation.

Great title! We have a lot of homes around that aren't in associations, and sometimes you get entire houses painted bright yellow, purple, etc.  It's quite the look.

Wow. My parent's house was painted that color, for a very short time, in the mid-80s. My dad said it looked different on the sample, but the paint dired this hideous oragne-gold color afterward. Pretty soon after that, they got (white) vinyl siding.

Kim, I guess there is an advantage to having an HOA. I guess they like the color of yellow mustard.

That's why I do cookie-cutter colors both inside and out when flipping a house. It's important to appeal to everyone. If they want to change the colors, then they can do that after moving in. But hopefully they won't be as bad as these! Hah. Thanks for the article.

Oh my.. looks like a Radioactive symbol would fit nicely on that mustard billboard of a garage door..

Had a few gallons of extra school bus paint laying around and couldn't let it go to waste?

Sometimes I don't even want to know the motivation because I don't have a good poker face!

Kim,

Nice one! When I saw the photo, I sat up straighter and tried to decide why I would paint my house a mustard color. Can't think of one reason to do it...

Wow, that is certainly a statement. About what is not exactly clear, though.

From the photo, it looks like they added an addition and painted only the addition. Is this true?
