Flowers, candy and assorted gifts have been mine on Valentine's Day throughout my 44 years of marriage to the same guy. But he has never whisked me off to a tropical island for a second honeymoon and I've never found rose petals on my pillow or experienced the romantic gestures that fill the February issue of women's magazines each year.
My husband has many wonderful qualities but he just isn't a romantic guy, and creativity would not be on any list of adjectives describing him. That's okay with me... I'm a pretty lucky lady to have such a wonderful person still love me after all this time.
Imagine my surprise when he walked into the room with this special Valentine's Day treat a few years ago - a bag made of chocolate and filled with whipped cream and strawberries!
He had melted Ghiradelli chocolate in the microwave, painted all the inside surfaces of a wax-coated bag from Dunkin Donuts with the melted chocolate, chilled it, and repeated the process several times. Then he peeled away the Dunkin Donuts bag to reveal this chocolate bag, and filled it with strawberries and whipped cream before delivering it to me - with two spoons.
The word "surprise" hardly describes my reaction.
My sweetie knows this will be a hard act to follow, so he hasn't even tried to top it. But that's okay, because he earned enough Valentine's Day points with this surprise to last a lifetime.
When I read Anna Banana's Valentine Contest Story Weekend - Share a Story! I knew this would be mine. Do you have a ValentineTude?
