My Once-in-a-Lifetime Valentine's Day Surprise

By
Real Estate Agent with Long & Foster Real Estate, Inc.

ValentineTudeFlowers, candy and assorted gifts have been mine on Valentine's Day throughout my 44 years of marriage to the same guy.  But he has never whisked me off to a tropical island for a second honeymoon and I've never found rose petals on my pillow or experienced the romantic gestures that fill the February issue of women's magazines each year.

My husband has many wonderful qualities but he just isn't a romantic guy, and creativity would not be on any list of adjectives describing him.  That's okay with me... I'm a pretty lucky lady to have such a wonderful person still love me after all this time.

Imagine my surprise when he walked into the room with this special Valentine's Day treat a few years ago - a bag made of chocolate and filled with whipped cream and strawberries!

He had melted Ghiradelli chocolate in the microwave, painted all the inside surfaces of a wax-coated bag from Dunkin Donuts with the melted chocolate, chilled it, and repeated the process several times.  Then he peeled away the Dunkin Donuts bag to reveal this chocolate bag, and filled it with strawberries and whipped cream before delivering it to me - with two spoons.

The word "surprise" hardly describes my reaction.

My sweetie knows this will be a hard act to follow, so he hasn't even tried to top it.  But that's okay, because he earned enough Valentine's Day points with this surprise to last a lifetime.

When I read Anna Banana's Valentine Contest Story Weekend - Share a Story! I knew this would be mine.  Do you have a ValentineTude?

Margaret - I think "creative" certainly made it into the list of adjectives describing your sweet man! Yes, that would be very difficult to top.. although, I am sure you would accept being whisked away to a tropical island if he ever felt so inclined. Happy Valentine's Day!

Who cares about tropical islands? They have bugs and hurricanes. I'll take chocolate any day of the week.

Steve - Very nice!

Wanda - I don't know what came over him that one year.  It truly was a once-in-a-lifetime experience.  If I doubted that, the do-it-yourself flowers I received yesterday served as a good reminder - i.e. roses in a box that require the recipient to arrange her own Valentirine flowers.  LOL.

Margaret, was he watching a little too much Martha that year? How clever to do that for you! He should do a guest blog on how he did it in his own words. If Larry tried that there would be some serious adjectives and it would take him two pages to explain what he had to do to make it...

That was very sweet of him and it would be very difficult to top.

Congratulations on over 44 years of marriage too-that is fantastic!

Maybe it has something to do with the name "Larry" - if your Larry is anything like mine, two pages might be enough...

I asked my brother and his wife about their son's new promotion over the weekend, and my husband chimed in with a year-by-year account of his military career.  My brother never did get a word in edgewise to answer my question about his son's promotion at work.

Hmmmmm, I think we could be on to something here Margaret. Both are great guys and make for interesting stories! We will have 15 years married the end of March and I would not trade him for the world.

I am still trying to imagine what our kitchen would look like if my Larry attempted what your Larry accomplished. That would be a good photo and story too!

Tell you nephew congratulations for us too.

Jacque - Actually, the kitchen was not too bad because he made this in advance and had to hide the bowl of melted chocolate from me.
