PUBLIC SERVICE to be or not to be?

By

I know this probably sounds like a Shakespeare question. Its a question that has me pondering  over the last few years I have been in this business and what has it got me? There really are two sides of the coin to examine. When I was a volunteer and a board member for the local food bank as well as other public service positions I got a lot of great publicity that helped my business!

The other side of the coin is the painful one. How often did you get sucked into unintentional public service? I'm thinking tour guide for non buyers and many other request that seemed weird at the time. Request that netted you nothing but expense and disappearing clients that turned out to be non clients. This is where my question was really headed. The next time I get an odd request will I ask myself first TO BE or NOT to be? Your thoughts and experiences?

Like anything else it's about balance and not so much as where it will end up.

The question is do you know where it might lead ?

Enjoy the day

To me, public service and volunteering should be given without any expectations in return.  I volunteer for things that I believe in and feel passionate about. Friendships, referrals, and new business are byproducts, but not the sole motivation for giving up my time, talent, and money.  I'm very careful about my public service choices to avoid becoming overburdened.

I volunteer all the time, Rob. I get so much out of it; including the greatest friendships. But, you do have to choose your volunteering because once you start--everyone wants a piece of you.

I wish I had more time for volunteering and public service.  The benefits come back to you when you least expect it.  But, as the other above stated, you can't let yourself get stretched out to thin.
