Is It Autumn or is it Fall?

autumn leavesAs a child I grew up calling it Fall...but the original description is Autumn.  Whatever it's called though I LOVE this time of the year...my very favorite season, even as a child.  Autumn/Fall not only reminds me of changing of the season, and the beauty that come with it, but it also reminds of back to school time, county fair time, ferris wheels, Harvest Festivals, and the like.

autumn leavesSeveral years ago we had the pleasure of taking a 2 week vacation to New York and the New England  states...we rented a car and drove from Boston to Niagara Falls...it was the first week of Autumn/Fall and the colors were spectacular!  I had never been to this part of the country and it was amazing to see God's handiwork on display!

autumn leavesAccording to Wikipedia: Autumn marks the transition from summer into winter.  The start of autumn is generally considered to be September 21.  The word 'autumn' is derived from the French word automne, and has been used as a word for a season since the 16th century. The North American name for the season, 'fall', probably derived as a contraction of the phrase "fall of the leaves", and since became used interchangeably.  Astronomically, some Western countries consider Autumn to begin with the September equinox (around September 23).

When I was a teenager, the only season I liked was summer.  Now I find something to love about everything.  As Larry Wolf has said on several occasions, "Youth is wasted on the young."  :)

Fall in the Dallas area is usually only about a week. It's hot, hot, hot, then it's nice and cool for a week, and then it's cold, cold, cold...  I would love this time of year more if we got more than a week to enjoy the change of season.

Hi Mary! I love fall. If there was a place where it was like this all year round...I'd be there in a heartbeat. Its the time of soups, apple cider, hot chocolate, and beautiful colors. Love the pictures!

Just yestwerday my wife and myself took a drive through sussex county into orange county NY even though its a little early in the season yet it was beautiful. Anyone who doubts the existence of God should just drive through the Northeast on a sunny fall day, hjis hadiwork is everywhere.

I think it depends on where you live as far as what you call it. Everyone here in south Texas that I personally know...calls it Fall. When I lived in Seattle, they called it Autumn. I love the season but it aggrivates my allergies. These beautiful yellow (sunflower like) flowers bloom everywhere and they irritate my sinuses. Otherwise, it is a beautiful sight if you can see while you are sneezing. lol.

Mary - like you, my favorite time of the year is rightnow, the Autumn!  I love it for the reasons you mentioned but also because it's getting close to Christmas, my all time favorite time of the year!  It says in word "FAMILY" and there's a cozy, loving feeling when I think about that!

Mary,  I'm a New Mexico girl.  When we were married we moved to New England - I couldn't believe the beauty of the Fall season until I saw it in person.  Pictures cannot describe it.  Now we live in Virginia near the Blue Ridge Mountains that overlook the Shenandoah Valley.  The Skyline Drive through the mountains is breathtaking any time of the year. Mary - Nice pictures. As a New Yorker, I have to resist the urge to take these precious moments for granted. You reminded me that I need to schedule a drive up the coast this Autumn/Fall. Thanks for the reminder.

Mary, very informative post.....I did not know the root of Autumn, but growing up in Massachusetts with the change of seasons, I miss the one we called Fall.

I'm English so it is Autumn.

However, I live in North Texas and it is still in the 90s and feels like summer.

I would love to see some colour in the leaves and feel a cooler temperature
