Help me pick a smartphone, anyone?

By

A few years ago I bought a cell phone with all the bells and whistles, lots of nifty features and a hefty pricetag. And I despised the thing from day one. I won't go into all the ways it and my cell carrier let me down, but suffice it to say I won't be buying that brand or using that cell company ever again.

But times have changed and I need to upgrade. My current phone is only a year old, but I bought it based on one question only: "Which phone in here has the longest talk time?" It worked out fine - the phone is reliable and I can talk for hours. But it doesn't exactly scream "success" to whip out the freebie phone (yes, the cheapest does have the longest battery life) and I really would like to stop lugging my laptop everywhere I go. So its time for a Smartphone...and I just can't make a decision.

My choices are:

Samsung SCH-i730,

thVerizon Wireless XV6700

Palm® Treo™ 700w Smartphone (Windows or Palm version - any suggestions are welcome)

So does anyone out there have feedback or suggestions for me? I'll be doing a lot of talking, email and some MLS searching.

Any input is appreciated! I just don't want to go through another bad experience.

I like the Palm Treo 700.  I've had the 650 for several years and love it.  I sync all of my contacts with my notebook each morning.  Couldn't live without the email that I can check all day when I'm away from the office, plus many other features that I use.  Also, great customer service when I call and have a question.  Instant answers.

I have the XV6700 and have wanted to throw it out the window for months now.  It is indeed a smart phone.  The only thing you can't do with it is have a whole conversation, at least based upon my experience with mine and the Verizon service on Long Island.  My other phone is a Treo 600.  I bought it when it first came out and am reluctant to upgrade since it works -- almost all the time.  I've heard of problems with the 650, but am not sure about the 700.

My next purchase, a simple phone with the Verizon service (if I stay with them at all) and a smart phone with my Sprint service.

I'd also highly recommend the Treo 700, had no problems so far and nothing but good things to say about it from my personal experience.

We have the Palm Treo 650 and one person in our office has had trouble with his but that was with a different carrier. We have had minimal problems and we use Verizon and I love it.

Retrieving email is a big plus and if I have to browse the web it works ok if you have a strong signal.

You can read reviews on CNET which I read a lot when searching out technicl products.

Good Luck! Jay

I still have the Treo 650. I just love it.  I most especially love the fact that I pay $6 per month insurance and I abuse the phone and get a new one every 60-90 days.  I'm a one man wrecking crew.  At any rate, if you ever have to replace it, you just sync it with your computer and all the info, contacts, photos, etc are put into the new phone without missing a beat.

I spend time in two different geographic location  Florida & Arizona.  It is easy to separate the contacts in outlook.  Almost everyone in our family has one now.

We use Verizon, Best call quality, Best Coverage especially out west where the is alot of open space and mountains, Not the least expensive. We want it to work when we want to make a call.  We do not want roaming or long distance charges either.  The phone/PDA/handheld computer is the new Q.

I have only used Balckberry.  Been using one for the past 6 + years back when they were only a portable email tool.  Probably won't change anytime soon.

Hey thanks for all the suggestions! It looks like the Treo wins - now if you can only help me find time to get to the Verizon store tomorrow!

I appreciate all the help - I rely so heavily on my phone I've been worried about the decision.
