Three of Florida's Top Ten beaches mentioned in Beaches - Florida's Top Ten -- Americas Best Online are right here in our own Pinellas Counties' backyard:

•·         Fort Desoto Park, Florida - Map, Info
At the southwest corner of Mullet Key, guarding the entrance to Tampa Bay, is Fort DeSoto, the largest park in Pinellas County, with over 1100 acres of sandy beaches, playgrounds, a campground, and nature trails.   Also named #1 beach in 2005 by "Dr. Beach"!

St Pete Beach Sunset

•·         Caladesi Island State Park, Florida - Map, Info
A pristine and secluded Florida state park, with the famous white-sand beaches, 3 miles of nature trail and 108-slip marina. Caladesi Island was seperated from what is now known as Honeymoon Island by Hurricane Pass, formed in 1921. The entire Caladesi Island Park contains six islands and a total of over 2500 acres of mangroves and tidal flats.  Also, the best Dog Beach in Northern Pinellas, according to my pal Snickey!

•·         Sand Key Park, Florida - Map, Info
Beautiful Sand Key Park opened in 1984, 95 acres of barrier island just South of Clearwater Beach. Clearwater Pass separates the park from Clearwater Beach, and bridges the Intercoastal to the Gulf.  Sand Key Park houses the base of operations for the artificial reef program, and it's wildlife include a beach where sea turtles annually deposit eggs, overseen by the Clearwater Aquarium, which collects statistics.  Sand Key also earns Snickey points for the Paw Playground.

A little bit further South down the Gulf's Suncoast is my other personal favorite beach destination, and also on the Top Ten Beaches:

Captiva Beach, Florida - Map, Info
A barrier island on Florida's Gulf Coast near Fort Myers, FL, Captiva Island is perhaps best known for the famous South Seas Resort, occupying the entire South end of the island. The public beach is situated at the North end of Captiva Road, and the entire Sanibel/Captiva area is noted for its laid back easy lifestyle, breathtaking sunsets, and wonderful shelling. The beach has white sugar sand, and is well known for unusual and prolific shells. Dolphin, Manatee and waterfowl sightings are common, especially since the 'Ding' Darling Wildlife Refuge is also located on Sanibel Island.  A wonderful place to canoe or kayak!

So, what are you waiting for?  Step away from the computer and GO TO THE BEACH!  But before you do--tell us where your favorite beach is!  The photo above was taken at Sunset Beach in St. Pete.

Siesta Key is indeed beautiful, and many others I failed to mention, such as Egmont Key!  Thanks for the reminder, Barbara Jo & Bill!

Just had the opportunity to re-visit some of my favorite beaches in the area these past couple of weeks--John's Pass (Treasure Island/Madeira Beach), and Egmont Key.  Pictures soon!
